Birthday Barolo.

13 year old wine... and it's mellowed out, but you can tell it's an average wine.

Buy the house vs the year.

This is odd. I had 3 bottles of this. 2 years ago, I opened the first. It seemed scorchy, bitterly tannic, and devoid of fruit. I gave bottle number 2 to friend with a caveat about my first bottle. This is the 3rd. I’m making a slowly-braised braised beef dish that calls for a whole bottle of wine, so I opened this to cook with. I tasted it just for laughs. Stunned. It’s really good. Sure, it’s still pretty tannic, but there’s a lot of aged Nebbiolo fruit, earth, a little tar. Good acids. Conclusion? First bottle was somehow flawed, though I’m not sure what flaw would make one bottle so stripped of fruit and scorchy and the next perfectly fine. Not Brett, not TCA. I don’t get it. I guess I’ll just enjoy the surprise!

Nose has menthol, scorched earth, dried leaves, and little fruit. Lean and mean in the mouth. Austere and dried out. Disappointing.

Enjoying a heart warming dinner at our local haunt Sala da Pronzo. This opens immediately drinkable bright and spicy with vanilla. Mellowed out a bit, still a spicy warmth and enjoyable.

Very fragrant on the nose. Could smell plums and floral scent as I was pouring it. Could smell the alcohol a bit but on the taste it did not stick out. Definite tannins and some nice acid. Taste of sour cherries. Really nice with food.
