Man, fruit is still vibrant, bright bing cherries and a little bit of smoke and ash.

High shoulder fill. Cork just short of being completely saturated. Poured into glasses about an hour prior; consumed over a three hour period. Color is a dark garnet with maybe the slightest hint of bricking on the edge. Intoxicating aromas of crème de cassis, tobacco, cedar, baking spices, and forest floor. On the palate, the fruit was remarkably fresh and vibrant for 35 years of age. Zippy, black currants, plums, leather and a touch of earth. Tannins are still holding fast! Finish lasts for a minute, plus. Stunning bottle. Honestly, it’s hard to think of a producer in Bordeaux that punches this far above its class. There was more than enough structure for this to easily go another 10 years...maybe even longer. Wow.

Wowie. April is my favorite time to drink bordeaux. En premieur, lamb, Greek Easter. What could be better. This is still alive and kicking in a big way. Earthy, bright and long.

Saturday night had a dual mission: to find a world class steak and to have a great catch-up with a couple of old friends. We're in Manhattan. Mission: Utterly Probable.

We headed to the Bowery Meat Company, which has become a regular fixture on various Best New York Steakhouses lists. The knowledgeable server brought us a fine array of steaks, explained some of the more unusual cuts and provided useful advice on the selection. The 40oz T-Bone Florentine was our table's centerpiece and delicious. Goal
#1, done.

One of the strengths of the Bowery Meat Company is its extensive, well chosen wine list. It also allows corkage ($40/bottle, max 2). I brought along this excellent 2009 Sociando-Mallet, possibly the best value wine in Bordeaux. Pure Old World charm with lashings of leather, tar and dark fruits. Plenty of complexity and drinking beautifully. The bottle drained quickly with plenty of laughs and anecdotes. Goal

One of the standouts of the vintage, the 2015 Sociando Mallet is all finesse. Light on its feet, gracious and super-expressive, the 2015 speaks to class above all else. The flavors are bright and beautifully lifted in this polished, sophisticated Haut-Médoc. Although a touch light, the 2015 is very pretty. The blend is 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2018)

Vintage 1990 - ripened tuilé colour, beautiful cherries in smell, as well as spicyness (laurel), pencil shavings, plums, minerals. Good balance, vitality, nice acidity and quite round at the moment. A Point. Long aftertaste. Classic. Was beautiful drinking, decanted it. With risotto al porcini.

Classic Medoc. Dusty tannins. Value bottle offered interesting snap shot of under valued producer. Last of a dozen bottles.

The 2000 vintage is a bit controversial , some say it is a great vintage other find it disappointing given the hype of the vintage being a millennium vintage. Sociando mallet is usually a great value wine and I loved 2003 and 2005, this is my first 2000, and it is still young and kicking. Deep red, nose full of green peppers, pencil shaving, a touch of barnyard, black currents and spicy wood, medium to full body with dry tannins and great acidity, long spicy peppery finish. My score 89, drink to 2022
