Dark scarlet to the rim. Nice nose. Notes of black fruit, cedar, some rhubarb and a hint of menthol. Nicely balanced in the mouth. Great wine with grilled ribeyes by the lake in the mountains.

Cal cab tasting. Deep dark purple with some bricking in the rims. Notes of dark red fruit, currant, cocoa and mocha, some roses. Thin in the mouth, even with decanter time. Great nose but the structure and mouthfeel is a bit lacking.

VTS bottle. Dark purple tawny. Opaque. Fragrant nose. Notes of black cherries, forest floor, walnuts, some pepper and a touch of black licorice. With air some menthol develops. Still big and bold in the mouth. Showed well tonight.

Scarlet tawny. Mostly opaque. Strong nose. Notes of black cherry, balsa wood, a bit of smoke, some menthol, pepper and a little anise. Silky and rich in the mouth. Still not showing any sense of decline. Another great showing.

Monthly WTF group recap. Theme this month was “bring something special”. Normally we taste all of the wines blind, but we decided to do a relaxed night with amazing wines at a great restaurant. Spectacular evening!

Able to taste this next to the ‘98...this is in a better spot now. A very round, soft and plush profile. There are mulberry, soft plum, fig and cherry liqueur aromatics while the palate showed more bayleaf, faint traces of herbs and leather, underripe blackberries and cherries. This actually drank quite youthful. Enjoy now! Thanks

Bright ruby-red. Penetrating aromas of black cherry, dried flowers and brown spices. Not as silky as the 2004 through 2007 vintages here but boasts noteworthy refinement and savory intensity, with fresh, harmonious acidity giving the wine good focus and finesse. Excellent depth here if not quite the flavor development of vintages like '07 and '04. Still, this conveys a thickness of texture and a faintly exotic quality and finishes with very suave tannins. The summer was rather cool but steady, and there was enough warmth in September to ensure ripe tannins without burning off needed acidity, noted Bo Barrett. A fairly elegantly styled Montelena Estate. (13.8% alcohol) (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, July 2019)

From a split and for my tastes, drinking at peak. In fact, this surprised me so much that I had to turn around and check the bottle when someone said it was an ‘02. Muddled raspberries, bing cherries, plum, baking spices and tobacco leaves on the nose. Balanced with wonderful structure. Not powerful or weak. Small amount of black fruit on the palate, but mainly dominated by bright red fruits. Some added notes of herbs and cedar at the finish.

En mag and my last bottle of a wine that is so very near and dear to my heart. Both from a human and wine lover’s perspective. Still ample delicious fruit combined with tannic back bone. Structure, balance, pucker, polish; everything I love in an aged Montelena. Fortunate to share it with an extraordinary crew @Eric LaMasters @David L @Joe Lucca @Mike R @Shawn R @Aaron Hamrock

Few wines are as near and dear to my heart as Montelena estate. My birthday eve dinner with my daughters and we had my daughter Bailey’s birth year to celebrate. Delicious mature cab, saddle leather, cherry tobacco and stewed plum.

Dark purple with tawny rims. Opaque. Great old Cab nose with notes of black cherry, saddle leather, tobacco leaf, earth and some cassis. Big mouth feel and long finish. This wine continues to sit on a great plateau of drinking window.
