This second wine of 5th Growth Haut-Bages Liberal is a very nice and relatively good value Bordeaux. Nose is lovely and shows graphite, leafy cassis and berry fruit, warm gravel, and a waft of a sweet-adjacent baking spice note. Mouthfilling, and with surprisingly good acidity for an ‘18, the palate has nicely concentrated fruit and savory notes. Some soft but significant tannin packed away in the finish. This is drinking quite well now but will probably be better in a year or two.

Very dark red in color, raspberry jam aroma. Notes of darker fruits up front to taste, mild acidity, and maybe one of the more unusual finishes I’ve encountered. Earthy minerals, plant-like and stone with a very bitter follow through. Not for me. (🎥 Last Night in Soho)

NOSE: Cassis, plum, mulberry, leather, blueberry, slate, dandelion, chicory, earth, iron, tea, wet veggies. COMPLEX.

TASTE: I love it, though it’s a bit bitter. Lighter than the nose suggests. Dried fruit (blackberry, strawberry, plum, cassis), good acidity. Tea-like tannins, complex herbs (can’t identify them), furry critter, blood. For others, 93 — for me, 94.

Yum. Dark intense fruit with perfectly integrated tannins lingering for minutes in the finish. Dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate edged with minerals.

Smooth, black cherry. There is some bitterness but I liked it. Bought at Mitsukoshi for ¥5,000.
