Tasting at Chalone Vineyards. Very good Chenin Blanc, estate grown from 101 year old vines. Fresh and crisp, a delight.

So exciting to experience! The wine geek in me died and went heaven when I tried this wine! Talk about bucket list wine experiences.

Surprise favorite of a Chenin blanc tasting, haven't had a current vintage Chalone wine in years, not since working for Acacia when it was still owned by Chalone. This wine had killer acid, varietal character, just enough richness. Can imagine this wine is a favorite of the production team at the winery--often these tiny production side wines are the most individual and exciting, less pressure and expectations. (I need to try the other Chalone wines and see what they are doing these days.)

Beautiful straw color. Smells like flowers and lemon dessert. Also ground up rocks. Flavors are voluminous and full for white. I’d even say creaminess is in there. Body is big. Hints of honey. Orange flower honey.

Barrel aged Chenin - love how it tips between barrel aged and nice hay melon and honey aromas love this larger style little over 14% abv seems balanced

So I have had a long love affair with this variety from this producer. I'm thrilled they moved away from those early 2000 plastic corks.
This Chenin has some of the 1980s floral, melon, pear notes that are hallmark from the Estate but still doesn't have the mineral backbone that exerts itself as wet stone aromas or steely finish.
That being said it was a fun flavor trip and I want to follow the future vintages with the new owners to see what they do.
That vineyard location is is naturally stressful to vines and has shown great concentration previously. Stay tuned!
