Caladu Cannonau di Sardegna

This wine is inky dark. The nose has very dark fruit notes, but it is primarily savory. Aromas of tobacco, tar, smoke, and earth dominate, in a bold show. The palate has more fruit coming forward, but it still has to fight for attention with the savory flavors. I paired the Cannonau with a variety of cheeses to good effect, but it went quite well with sauteed mushrooms.

No notes but didn’t compare as favorably to my first bottle several weeks ago.Still, old school Sardinia producer has got my attention. Feral ink black fruits.

If a northern Rhone met its soul partner in Sardinia, this may be their offspring. Firmly medium bodied, very dark color w almost black blue fruits. Canonau aged in concrete. Gamey but enough cassis & fruit on them bones to feel accessible. Paired w Hawaiian style grilled chicken BBQ. Very, very good & appeals to my old school palate.

Plum, cherry, red raspberry, vegetal notes, Rosemary, slight mint, touch of molasses at the end. Serve a bit chilled.

The 2016 Cannonau di Sardegna Caladu opens up with masses of crushed blackberries, florals, spicy tangerine and smoke. It’s soft and enveloping, contrasted by depths of wild berries, savory herbs and salty mineral notes. This tapers off dry with a twang of tart black fruits over a subtle coating of fine tannin. The zesty 2016 Caladu is ready to please. (Eric Guido, Vinous, March 2021)

Spicy red fruit, bramble / smokiness with a charcoal bite on palette with dusty tannins, rich wild raspberry

Not my favorite cannonau, but nice notes of bramble-y black berries, musty basement, and a violet like floral perfume with an after scent that almost smells like chips? Medium bodied, with prominent black cherry, blackberry, and a juiciness that’s balanced by a finishing minerality and light tannins.
