The first of 2 vintage Cape Mentelle wines for Sunday lunch. This was a mid yellow in colour. Aromas of ripe grapefruit and other citrus with a nutty overtone. Underripe stone fruit notes coming through on nose and palate. Medium plus intensity on the fully integrated and balanced palate. An excellent Chardonnay which you could cellar for a few more years but essentially at its peak.

In the mould of Leeuwin Estate Art Series (a neighbor in south Margaret River) but not as full and lush as the Art Series. This is s more modern interpretation but still intense on nose and palate. With Grapefruit but also stone fruit and a touch of gingerbread. Great length. An excellent Margaret River Chardonnay.

One of the best value Chardonnay made in Australia. Over delivery of fruit, subtle oak and structure. Hints of meal and nuts, stone fruit and youthful tension. Superb

Wow; how maturing #margaretriver #chardonnay does vary; see recent #cullen #2009 which was brassy, this gleaming green and plenty of it; #cullen restrained, this #capementelle is butch; nose power of smoke or burnt things, bottle age nose not simple, evidence of lees/ mlf from the smoke; palate chunky, lime juice, burnt toast you taste in 30 yo Eden Valley riesling; juicy smoke; rich, not terribly drying, acid taut, 13%, AUD 35, full bodied, no apparent reason for it to fade for a while; contained power. #uncorkedandcultivated #wineandfoodtours

Let it shake off its chill and it opens well.

Lovely and Fresh Australian Chardonnay. Stunning shiny gold, lovely nose, grapefruit, lime, mineral, vanilla , oak and a touch of exotic fruit. Full round creamy body, fresh mineral and lightly spiced with wood, with very pleasant acidity that balances well the oak. Overall, elegant and tempting with a fin finish. A lovely bridge between new and old world. My score 88+, drink to 2018

Happy 50 year anniversary Cape Mentelle!

If you haven’t yet visited Cape Mentelle in Margaret River, pop it on your to do list once we’re on the other side of this Coronavirus pandemic. It was back in 2013 when we visited the cellar door and uncovered the deliciousness of the brand.

Cape Mentelle was established by David Hohnen in 1970 and is one of the first founding Margaret River wineries. A big thanks for sending this sample bottle my way, it was well looked after 😉

This 2017 Chardonnay was given 97 points by James Halliday and was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented and held in bottle until release. It’s 14.5% however I wouldn’t have guessed that. To be honest, it’s an absolutely divine wine!

It’s a clear glistening gold shade in the glass. Enticing notes of nectarine, white peach, vanilla, lemon curd and sweet charred oak rise up from the glass. While on the palate it’s ultra smooth and creamy with orchard fruit sweetness alongside a slice of lemon 🍋 tart, well integrated oak and a long refreshing finish. So delicious!

This wine was sent to me as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!

Well made but for my palate it was ultimately not refreshing. Strange. Loads in it so maybe hold for 5 years.
