Amazingly tight for a 16-year old wine. The acids are smell-able on the nose, zinging along tart, macerated wild cherry fruit and glacier-crushed rock fragments. (OK, maybe I’m making up the part about how the crushed rocks were created.) In the mouth it’s deep but the acids rip this along on the palate like a whitewater canoe ride. Really really unique and good.

Popped and poured; consumed over three days and probably best on Day 1 though Day 3 didn’t exactly suck either; I think it depends on what what you’re looking for. The 2009 AR.PE.PE. Grumello “Sant’Antonio” pours a bright garnet color with a translucent core. On the nose, effusive notes of ripe red and dark fruits, roses and tar. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Elegant. Savory. Gorgeous. Confirming the notes on the nose. This girl be classy and oooh, she got some real hips! This Nebbiolo is all about finesse and I am here for it! Drink now and through 2029.

Jul 8th, 2023Man that nose is ethereal. Just unreal. Tar, super floral roses with a dash of some dark red (burgundy) roses but more classic red mostly. But the ethereal level of this wine’s aromas are really compelling. Stunningly presented red cherry fruit with a leafy edge. Wow. Chestnut and spice and mindnumbingly complex. A 9.8 nose. Palate is satin. Perfect satin. Ungodly juicy and delicate with brilliant sweetness and sap. Nimble as a Ferrari with awesome purity and just such a delicate presence. But also sweet. Screams Chambolle. The elegance is off the charts. Structured but wrapped in satin. Also minerals galore on the finish. This has it all.

Soulful. Ethereal cherry fruit with softening tannic grip, acid structure, and a host of secondary notes. In a nice spot if a bit muted. Hold if you only have a couple. If you’re like me and priced out of GC burg this scratches that itch nicely.
