Sep 29th, 2023A deep core of dark fruit takes center stage on this bottle - blueberry and blackberry and something like those but more wild and atypical, and fresh fruit but even some candies fruit notes. Herbaceous notes like bay leaf, oregano and tarragon and also exotic woods like sandalwood. Slight undercurrent of exotic spices m. Less Smokey and meaty notes than the last bottle I opened. This feels much more transparent, primary and...Burgundian?
Still with gray acidity and big drying tannins, but opening up. Excited to see it in a few years!

So...transparently volcanic! Ash, smoke along with fresh steak tartare, herbs. Dark berry fruits play a secondary role. Still very tannic, but also very transparent. Wow. Really excited to see how this evolves

Was in the mood for a Pinot Noir, and the waiter recommended this Pinot Nero. It had the complexity of a Pinot Noir but was more fruit forward (cherry, strawberry) with some spice.

Interesting Pinot Noir from Sicily. The Calabretta vineyards are located in the back volcanic soils on Mt. Etna's north slope. Calabretta is know more for its Etna Rosso , an elegant wine know throughout Italy. This Pinot Nero is so different from its Burgundy namesake that you might think it not Pinot Noir at all. Much darker in the glass, with a ruggedness not expected of Pinot. Still a bit young, I would give it an hour or two in a decanter. This will go well with most grilled red meats. For the Pinot fans, venture south and try this Sicilian version.
