Celebrating the arrival of more face-masks with a completely unoaked Sangiovese. Intellectually this is an interesting data point, but I do think that large-barrels, even though they don’t add any direct taste element, perform an essential textural service. This wine has extremely bright sour cherry fruit with a sweet but very subtle minerally/gravelly note. Chiseled in the mouth, bone dry and lean, with bright acids. Great with pork cutlet parm, but a little unfriendly on its own.

UPDATE: On night 2, the fruit seems riper and the texture a bit softer and more expansive.

The Ottantadue from Il Carnasciale. The absolute purest form of Sangiovese, yet it feels so unique. A charming act of red cherries, strawberries caught in a midway of crunchy and that perfect fruit ripeness, florals and a bunch of fresh herbs with a fresh salty breeze and a solid portion of crushed stones that is flirting in the background. Caressing but vibrant fruit profile on the palate with a fresh spine and a slight tannic grip that is working togheter throughout the finish.
An inviting and forward wine yet with plenty of complexity and with the producers signature gravelly identity still intact.
Serve slightly chilled and pair it with fresh pasta with roasted vegetables, dressed with lemon zest, garlic and some top shelf olive oil or whatever makes your Tuscan summer bell ring.
A very welcoming addition and great contrast to the more “meditating” Caberlots in the producers portfolio.

Tasty stuff! This is a barrel sample of the soon-to-be-bottled 2017 vintage; their 3rd release of this very naked Sangiovese expression. Short maceration and ageing a year steel (+2 months in used Barriques prior to bottling). Aromatic, herbaceous and cherry scented with ditto flavours and juicy acidity; this has “drinkability” written all over it!

Where most Sangiovese remains either magical and rare to find/ afford or just simple, green and utterly boring, this version represents something else. Silky tannins, caressing red fruits and just wonderful to drink young. A great, inviting and personal version, which more producers should aim for.

Still enjoyable with a non-Caberlot set of reds. No wood and it shows.

A bit transparent in the edge area. A bit dry. Well match with uncured ham. Mid body. 2017 @1250, Kping - XH, 200623-200702

Good fruit, lovely acidity. A delicious wine with pizza.

Very good but unusual take on sangiovese. Lighter and more pinot like than other sangiovese. It's like an Oregon pinot married a chianti and this was its child.
