Bruno Giacosa
Falletto di Serralunga D'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo
Youthful but very enjoyable now, especially for fellow acid freaks. At first, candied strawberry, with balancing acidity and tannins (both high). Given some time, more traditional Barolo notes emerge... highly aromatic violets and rose hips, with a bit of sandalwood and light tobacco behind sour cherry. This might sound like other Barolos, but it’s significantly different, and from a more ethereal plane. Likely one of those wines that would be tough to nail down with age due to high aromatics and sweet fruit, which would be less prominent with 10-15 years of age. Perfectly happy now, in my glass.

Sep 27th, 2019Reddish with some amber. Delicate nose, or maybe so sitting next to a Beaucastel that is like smelling salts. Notes of black cherry, red rose, some sappy fruit and a little earth. Nicely balanced in the mouth, better than I expected for the vintage. Not great but not bad.

Sep 15th, 2019Tawny and mostly translucent. Fruit dominated nose with some funk. Notes of chopped ripe cherries, moist earth, pepper, some molasses and faint red roses. In the mouth, a high level of fruit matched against modest structure and light tannins. Medicinal and a little hot, some raisin notes, not all that balanced. Reflective of the hot year/vintage. An ok drink but will wait to see what 10 more years of age will add to the experience.

Dec 2nd, 2018A surprisngly approachable nose. Tobacco, black cherry, dark rose. Certainly not open but a really fun to drink now. There’s a lightness and dynamism to this despite its power that is exciting. Great stuff... but for the future.

Nov 30th, 2018From a restaurant list, decanted and poured. Nice reddish color with bricking, translucent. Aromatic floral nose with notes of sweet plums, rose petals, some tar and a little hickory. Watery at first but firmed up with air. We went through 4 btls of this, all consistent. Showing some age. Its still youthful overall.

Mar 28th, 2018Perfecto! Well not quite but so delicious the bottle ran out because I poured it all into my glass, again and again and again until the bottle was empty!

Aug 31st, 2017Wow. Not like a Barolo. More like Burgundian. It’s very elegant with light tannins and exquisitely paired with every item on the tasting menu.
