Feb 22nd, 2025Mencia grape from 80 year old vines on slate soil. Top wine, very aromatic, red fruit but stony undertone. Surprising, very high quality, Drinks beautifully now but has a good ten years in it. Great acidity and pure balance.

This is “A Sierra” if that matters.
Nose: terrific. Fresh crunchy blackberries. Lilacs. As this opens a bit savory. I really like the nose.
Palate: delicious blackberries. Drying tannins which dissipate. Delicious. Almost an elegant glou glou wine. A hint of tomato vine.

Smells like Spain. Bloody, meaty, rocks. Loads of flowers and minerals on the nose, leans towards Gamay, but dark.
The palate is med-light, a slight pull at your cheeks, very blue/black flavors, some coffee, plums, toast, really nicely done Mencia.Big Violets on the nose after a bit of air…pastilles?

An hour + out, it’s leathery on the palate( pleasantly),furry tannins building.

The cold vintage brings this to a new level of elegance.
Dark fruit galore with dark cherry, mulberry, damson plum. With a pinch of exotic spice and some wet earth.
On the palate this is just so smooth. Poised, elegant with polished sandy tannins and beautiful juicy acidity. Nice depth & precision here. And purity.
I find this a dash more elegant vs Mencias from Valtuile, less edgy & approachable earlier.
A really lovely wine.

Color of purple, quite dark and dense. Nose of cocoa, dark fruits, blackberry, vanilla, strawberry, a bit plum, a bit oak, and ripe grapes. Taste is silky vanilla, a bit tickling carbonate, ripe grapes, a bit fermented cabbage, a bit sweet, and definitely good coffee note. Low tannins with a bit zest note in the after taste. Tasty.
