La Basseta Priorat Garnatxa Negra

This was served during my annual WWC hosting. Typical format of sparkler, three whites, four reds, one dessert, all served blind.

My goal was to see how this showed blind compared to the 2015 Saint Damien Louisiane Gigondas. Both are 80 Grenache/ and mostly rounded out by Syrah (difference is the Gigiondas had some Mourvèdre).

Decanted an hour. After an extra 30mins, this became nicely lifted. Not sharp or high toned, but very pretty Grenache. More purple than the Gigondas with a juicier profile…raspberries, spiced blueberries, blackberries with lavender and good tannin. Vibrant acidity. Kiss of espresso. No trace of pepper like the Gigondas. Similar to Alto Moncayo’s Grenache, but brighter. A wine I’d like to revisit on its own.

This for me shows the true character and style of #Priorat #Priorato a blend of #carignane #cariñena and #garnacha with that pure concentrated #mediterranean style and an excellent maturing in oak.

Gift from a friend. Deep inky purple. Good red fruit aroma and flavors as soon as I opened the bottle. Good acidity and tannins on finish, some bitterness as well. Expect wine to open up more with time - promising - red fruit, mint, nice varietal character

Better on day 2/3 ....rich and boozy ..... Needs 3-5 years

End of an era, just Creu Alta remaining.

With Jambalaya and cornbread biscuits. Amazing. Bought at the winery on our trip to Spain. This is a cornbread by the fire wine for sure.

Single vineyard Garnacha was tasting mighty fine, needed about 2 hours to really open up and show its stuff.

Stewed dark fruit, spice in abundance, hint of porcini, meaty mouthfeel. Soft and velvety. Although the finish is underpinned by some alcoholic heat, this is a very nice wine that warms the heart and the head.

This is 45% Carinena, 40% Garnacha 15% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Big, rich, extracted. Big fruit and a hint of burn on the finish.

Big big wine. Lots of dark fruit. Still drinking well
