Dec 28th, 2022Adventuring past Lopez or Rioja Alta slways intrigues- this ‘12 beauty is broad & generous. Black fruited & rich, medium acidity. While Rioja Alta’s lineup may have finer tannins & more acidic snap on the back end, this is all about the fruit.

Oct 18th, 2022The nose offers black fruit - plums, currant, blackberries - and a savory spice and herb rack featuring pepper, anise, cinnamon, clove and sage. On the palate, there’s plenty of dark fruit and more savory touches. The tannins are firm and the acidity is refreshing, while the finish lasts a good long while.

Mar 15th, 2022Wow! We have made another weekend in the age of Covid. Tonight I have opened the 2010 Beronia Gran Reserva Rioja. The blend is 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano.
On the nose there is black cherry, black plum, fig, clove, tomato, vanilla, leather and earthy.
On the palate is black cherry, intense black plum, black currant, clove, spice, licorice, cedar and earthiness.
This wine is full bodied big mouthfeel with a medium + to high acidity and a medium + firm grippy mouth coating tannins that leaves you with a long well balanced dark fruit earthy finish. A beautiful Rioja! Have a great weekend please stay safe and stay healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Deep ruby; medium intensity aromas of restrained blackberry, black cherry, red plum, underbrush, old wood, intense cinnamon, cloves, allspice, old leather, subtle vanilla; dry, medium acid, silky medium tannins, high alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus intensity flavors consistent with aromas; long finish, more oak on palate than nose, well aged and balanced, outstanding

Feb 1st, 2020For a nearly 40 yro Rioja so fresh & vibrant. High pitch notes of mixed red fruit and vanilla on palate. Still snap of acidity to close out finish. Interesting to compare to the younger Lopez Tondonia from night before-not as deep? Drank by the river Jan Kill at the end of a good hike.

Jul 24th, 2018The strength here is its freshness-tasted this vintage out of a magnum, at a spanish wine tasting, & was very similar. Has the tension but not depth or idiosyncrasies of rioja alta or lopez with this age, I think.

May 8th, 2018Took a bit of a break from rating wines. Wanted to reset and be truly in the moment of the experience.
Anyways, this Tempranillo was a joy. Plums, figs, dark cherries, slight hints of cloves, vanilla, and soft peppery spices. Well integrated and balanced. Paired with Hy’s traditional Ceasar salad and Filet mignon (medium rare).
