Domaine Grand Veneur Les Champauvins Côtes du Rhône Red Rhone Blend
Glad I waited, a little time was good for this one. Nice fruit, not too forward but not absent…do I dare say balanced. A little earth but the black berry and cherry really dominate. A little leather on the finish, but for the $30 range, it’s making us happy. Will it work with the lamb dish I’m preparing…I think so.

Nov 13th, 2023Stylish with plenty of Southern Rhône character, the CDR Les Champauvins from Dom. Grand Veneur is drawn from a plot just north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and neighbouring Beaucastel’s Coudoulet lieu-dit. It features quite generous aromas of plum, hoisin, violet, garigue and vanilla leading to a very spicy and full bodied palate that hides its high ABV (15%) well. This is a good imitation of its AOC superiors and drinks well at four years of age.

Feb 9th, 2021I was sure there was more Mourvèdre in this as it reminds me a bit of drinking Bandol, lots of black pepper & tannin framing the rich fruit. Turns out to be 70 Grenache/20 Syrah/ 10 Mourvèdre. High quality CDR here.

1 person found it helpfulOct 13th, 2016This has all the hallmarks of a classic. Cherry, dark plum and leather on the nose. Big cherry fruit with a nice hit of pepper. And now the bad news: tannins are out of control. Shame, for this would be 91-93 points otherwise.
