Nice little #hungary #grunerveltliner quaffer from Trader Joe’s - Nice white floral and tart citrus nose. Not that substantial on the palate but you notice some slight spritz up front, citrus zest, touch of beeswax and solid acidity. It held up well to homemade falafel and couscous salad, even with a spicy pepper sauce. QPR is quite strong for $6. — 6 years ago

Prager Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten "Stockkultur" 2015
Ironically the Bodensteins were in NYC while we were in the Wachau so we did not get to meet them or taste the 2015s. Prager has a knack for very balanced and precise wines deeply reflective of the best expressions of terroir in the Wachau. I was stoked to see this on the shelf tonight and had to open it.
"Stockkultur" means single stalk planting, exactly like you would see in the Northern Rhone. It's rare to see this kind of vine style in the Wachau, but was more common years ago. It's then no surprise to learn the 1 acre le dieu was planted in 1938 within the Achleiten vineyard.
We have an exceptional Gruner here, one of the best of the trip and rivaling Hochrain and Achleiten from Rudi Pichler.
A light to medium gold color. The nose was coiled tight revealing lime, green apple and stoney minerality.
The palate was more open, the juicy green apple and lime worked perfectly with the mouth watering acids that seemed well integrated. Medium bodied but so much density and dry extract. The finish was juicy as well, with purity, density and very good length.

Wine 1 of 4 of another world tour of wines purchased at Total Wine. The
Grüner Veltliner grape is by far the most widely grown grape in Austria. The variety is a bit unusual, as it is an offspring of Traminer and St. Georgen, the second parent being of local descent in Austria. The wines can run sweet to off-dry with flavor from stone fruit to citrus. Paired this one with a Mushroom-Swiss chard quiche and was not disappointed. On the eyes: Starbright straw yellow, light stain, light legs. No floc - gas/effervescence observed.

On the nose: Unripe pear and green apple, lemon rind, vanilla, honey, and floral notes. Med- alcohol.

On the tongue: Light tannin, med+ acid, med- alcohol, effervescent with a nice round mouthfeel. Off-dry. Citrus poached pear/apple that finishes with an herbaceous mineralty. Med finish, med body. — 10 years ago

It was time for a #grunerveltliner fix. Lemon, some honey, wet limestone and interesting wild onion aromas. Fairly weighty on the palate, citrus and a touch buttery, moderate acidity with a crisp mineral finish. This is a good QPR GV for a modern-style California Chardonnay lover. — 6 years ago

A great introduction to Smaragd #grunerveltliner from the Wachau. The density and body of the top wines with energy and freshness of a younger wine. The nose and palate reveal the hallmark (for GV) cracked white peppercorn, basil, fragrant white flowers, with a persistent layer of pear and lime citrus fruit. A touch of ripeness falls in line with the house style. Excellent value and a great example of Smaragd.
