Wine Situation Final Five (Now With Drunk Dialing!)

The Wine Situation hosts everyone from winemakers to writers to find out what a person’s situation is…with wine. It’s the solo season with host Ellen Clifford, but listen in with a glass, and nobody is drinking alone! In lieu of guests, at the end of every action-packed episode Ellen is phoning a friend with her Final Five questions. This week Ellen talks to writer and host of the Goop Yourself podcast, Agnes Hewitt. Check out the full episode here QUESTION ONE Ellen: Whatcha drinking? Agnes: I’ve been drinking a lot of intense, full-bodied reds. I went to a really nice dinner with a friend, and it was a steakhouse, and we were drinking Syrah . That was the tipping point; I had a martini and two glasses of wine. And then over the weekend I was working, trying to finish a pilot I was writing, and I was stressed out, and I had a bottle of Grenache . I was like…this will help me. QUESTION TWO Ellen: Question number two: Goop Kitchen, worth it or not? Agnes: Yes. Goop Kitchen, worth it. Goop Rotisserie, definitely worth it. Goop Superfina, only if you are gluten-free. From Goop Kitchen, I would recommend the Brentwood Chinese Chicken Salad. There’s also a Thai salad that’s delicious, and another salad that comes with these candied nuts and roasted squash. QUESTION THREE Ellen: What are your favorite non-alcoholic beverages? Agnes: I have been chugging a lot of LaCroix, or LaCroix-like drinks in the last little bit. I’ve grown really fond of black cherry anything. And I just picked up, from Trader Joe’s, their starfruit, which I think is the king of sparkling waters. It’s really good. QUESTION FOUR Ellen: Question number four: you find out you are having dinner with Gwyneth Paltrow, what do you make her? Or where do you take her? Agnes: I would want to take her somewhere her dad would go because I can’t out Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwyneth Paltrow. Or if she came over to my humble apartment, I would be like a 50’s housewife. I would make a roast and baked potatoes, and I’d have a martini bar set up. QUESTION FIVE Ellen: The last question is just what is bringing you joy these days? Agnes: I’ve been really enjoying writing, being creative, working on projects, and also being out and going to the movies. I love going to the movies. It’s my favorite thing. I missed being in a movie theatre so much during lockdown. *** You can find the Agnes’ podcast Goop Yourself, wherever you find podcasts on Instagram @goopyourself and @agneshewittpilots and check out her website, www.agneshewitt.com if you would like to learn how to write a pilot! Terrassous

Rivesaltes Ambré Hors d'Âge 6 Ans Vin Doux Naturel Grenache Blend

At risk of sounding weird, which obvi I’m gonna take because I am weird, this wine feels like an after school snack. So much golden raisins, dried orange peel and graham cracker. In elementary school I always hated golden raisins and got embarrassed in I ended up with raisins of any sort in my lunch because it seemed to scream NERD (and my friend Eliza told me they reminded her of cockroaches). Well F*#k peer pressure to be cool, which includes both snacking on dried fruits and adoring sweet wine. It’s not unctuous but is rich but not cloying. It does have those dried fruit and graham cracker after school notes plus some citrus and mayhaps there’s even a hazelnut and acacia blossom nearby? Pairs with mincemeat pie. — 2 years ago

Campovida

Dark Horse Ranch Grenache 2016

I’m a sucker for great Grenache. If it can age all the better. Boozy raisins and blueberries. — 3 years ago

Château Pech-Ménel

Saint-Chinian Syrah Blend

Everything by this winery is textural perfection that speaks both to wealth and lithe limbs. Wine that knows how to be rich but not rude. Indeed it is silk and soigné — 3 years ago

Domaine Gardiés

Clos des Vignes Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel Grenache Blend 2018

Purpley-blues satin energy! Linear, mineral, with bright acid grounded with a touch of ripe fruit weight—dark cherries and plums—then yet again cut by pomegranate. Love it. — 3 years ago

Mas Bécha

Barrique Roussillon Red Blend 2019

Beautifully decadent! And one of the few Roussillon wines I tried with a noticeable hit of oak on it and I was into it. The spice of oak was countered with both tart and fleshy fruit. Like lying in a bed so comfortable you just want to stay in it…and drink more wine. Go fig. — 3 years ago

Warr-King Wines

Tenacity Stillwater Creek and Rosebud Vineyard Mourvedre Syrah 2017

I love Warr-King and this might be my favorite yet (although that Roussanne tho), plus it benefits SPIN (STEM Paths Innovation Network) Girls. It tastes like what it is named. It is bold. The finish is persistent. It is complex: at once earthy and grounded as it is exuberant and electric. — 3 years ago
