Lunar New Year 2023: The Year of the Rabbit

The 2023 Chinese New Year began Sunday, January 22 and is the Year of the Rabbit. The Rabbit is fourth in the order of the Chinese Zodiac animals. We've gathered a list of "Rabbit" wines as well as wines that belong to the vintages of the Rabbit. Those born in 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023 should grab a bottle of one of these Rabbit wines or even a vintage from their birth year. There's no denying that these years produced some noteworthy vintages, so let's celebrate the Year of the Rabbit by revisiting these unforgettable wines! E. Guigal

La Turque Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1999

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to taste the three La La's from the 1999 vintage side by side last night. La Turque was, by far, the most concentrated and frankly, massive of the three. Impressive aromas of dust, earth, iron, game, spice, damp clay, blood, meat and bone. Sculpted layers of flavor, depth and sheer power continue in the mouth with brooding black fruit, mouth-coating, yet balanced tannins, a compelling animal quality, savory notes, dollops of spice. This wine is an amazing, bordering on spiritual journey. — 10 years ago

Solera 1927 Montilla-Moriles Pedro Ximénez 1927

Rich, mahogany-colored in the glass. The 1927 Alvear PX is incredibly weighty, lush and dense. Golden raisin, fig purée and caramel along with an ethereal note of candied orange peel. Intensely sweet, but nicely balanced with acidity, it is entirely mouth coating and silky. Finishes with a slinky, meandering ribbon of dark chocolate. Wow. — 10 years ago
