Over the weekend I opened the 2019 Barboursville Vineyards Octagon Bordeaux Blend from Barboursville, Virginia. A blend of 62% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

On the nose there is black cherry, blackberry, plum, black currant, vanilla, spice, licorice and earth.

On the palate I find black cherry, blackberry, black plum, licorice, black currant, spice, herbaceous notes and dark rich earth.

This is a medium + to full bodied wine with medium + acidity and medium + fine grippy astringent tannins which leaves you with a long black fruit crushed stone finish. Spring has arrived this week, so try and have a great full week in anticipation of the coming greenery and foliage. Stay safe and healthy and please be kind to one another. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

One of the best, if not the best vintner in the state of Virginia. FWIW that is not faint praise. Virginia wines are coming along quite well. California, don't look back. The Old Dominion is gaining on you!

Conservative winemaking but in the best way. Firm tannins and dark fruit, nothing confected nor herbal, new oak has yet to fully integrate, but I trust this is the right call for a wine that deserves medium-long term cellaring.
I asked Luca about their Nebbiolo, which they have been bottling since the 80s that have aged exceedingly well, spurring then to plant more.

The Octogan is the flagship wine of the well respected winery Barboursville Vineyards in Virginia, South near Charlottesville.
One of the most coveted red wines from Virginia, this is in the upper echelon of quality.
Finesse and old world charm are what define this wines style, with a restrained set of fruit aromas, some earth tones of soil dust. The palate is medium to medium + bodied and the structure is fine and elegant.with good acids.

This is hitting it's stride! I'd put this up against many left-bank Bordeaux or Super Tuscans from the same vintage. This has a medium plus finish of red and blue fruits, dried herbs, leather and structured tannins that have this ready for a meal.
