When we first opened this, my father was convinced it was shot. Smelled like green olives to meβ€” I recommend waiting a while for it to open up. He grumbled, walked off, and declared it future cooking wine. Guess who was right? Me, the certified sommelier. Rich chocolate, caramelized black fruit, leather.

This is the 2016 Rizzi Barbaresco Nebbiolo from Tresio, Italy.

On the nose is cherry, fennel, licorice, violets, clay pot and earth.

On the palate is sour cherry, cranberry, spice, licorice, roses, graphite and dried soil.

This wine medium to full bodied with medium+acidity and medium+ fine tannins that leads to a ling red fruit licorice finish. I hope everyone's year is starting out good. Please keep positive thoughts and stay healthy and safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

The wine tonight on the eve of our 4th of July, our Independence Day, I have opened the 2016 Rizzi Barbaresco Azendia Vitivinicola from Treiso, Italy.

On the nose there is is cherry, raspberry, strawberry, licorice, herbs, dried roses, light oak and earth.

The palate gives me cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, licorice, tar, spices, herbs, dried roses and dry dusty soil.

This wine is medium to full bodied smooth mouthfeel with medium to medium + acidity and high mouth coating astringent sandpaper tannins that gives you long red fruit earthy finish. I continue to wish everyone a enjoyable holiday weekend, please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Seems like Rizzi did pretty well in 2016. Need to buy more!

At Norman’s for their 15th Anniversary for the restaurant. 6 James Beard Award Winning Chefs, 3 Master Sommoliers, 1 Master of Wine and 7 courses. Pairings were spot on and this Barbaresco lined up with Course #4, roasted quail and foie gras. Even though the Barbaresco had a solid garnet color, it was delicate with red fruits, herbs and light spice. Balanced and a decent finish length.

Unmistakably Italian. Notes of Rose Mint and Herbs. Medium weight and ready to drink now.

Seems pretty round and soft for a wine of this stature and age. Nice, although not complexity to garner a higher rating.
