Domaine Leflaive

Les Chenes Macon Verze Chardonnay 2019

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2019 Mâcon-Verzé Les Chênes was ordered from the list at Au Fil du Zinc in Chablis, principally because it is not shown whenever I visit Leflaive in Puligny. It acquits itself well. It's fresh on the nose with orchard fruit and white tea, though I would not describe it as complex. However, it exudes presence and concentration. The palate has commendable weight and is well-balanced. The acidity neatly counterbalances the concentrated fruit, dovetailing into a brioche-tinged finish with sufficient salinity to beg another sip. Polished off over dinner, it cost 60 Euros on the list. Money well spent. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2023)

Château Malartic-Lagravière

Grand Cru Classe de Graves Pessac Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. That sumptuous Graves nose of herbs and chocolate milk. Light medium body. Petite spell of astringency with paprika, zinc and orange peel in the finish currently but it dissolves after twelve seconds or so and the aforementioned herbs come back into play on a lingering, subtle denouement. — 3 years ago

Edna Valley Syrah 2021

2021 vintage. Smoke and cinnamon in the nose. Medium-heavy body. That smoke and cinnamon along with a little prune, graham-cracker, cracked black pepper, a dash of white pepper, white sage, zinc and salt water fill out the flavor profile. Definitely intriguing. — 2 years ago

Château Pavie Macquin

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

2017 vintage. Oh. Wow. Blue/black fruit, dusty cedar and rhubarb in the nose. Silky medium body. The cedar (and a bit of oak) galloping through on a body thinning finish that ends up supremely dry after collecting zinc, orange peel and sea salt. This baby needs some TLC in the cellar and will grow up to be an absolute monster. — 3 years ago

Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2007

2007 vintage. Decanted and tasted immediately and throughout 1.5 hours. Medium/medium-heavy body. Initially filled with Chambord and sweaty saddle flavors and aromas. Picked up some copper/aluminum flavors along with a distinct, pushy zinc finish after that 1.5 hours. Seems to have enough personality to go steady for another 5-6 years without a noticeable drop-off. 11.12.23. — a year ago

Domaine de Chevalier

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. This is the red. Cinnamon, allspice, herbs, sea salt/brine in the nose. An doppelgänger Bandol-light body. A touch riper mid-palate than expected. Previous baby fat gonzo. Green peppercorn also present in the nose but a slight zinc/iodine flavor on the finish shortly after opening. Expecting that to blow off/roll away…it wasn’t there a few months ago. Seemingly in transition but still delicious. If I weren’t so lazy at home, woulda decanted. Lazy tho. Judge not... — 3 years ago

@Peter van den Besselaar Danke. It’s a complicated effort as many of the wines we taste are. Would love to find this bottle in the cellar in two decades and reevaluate. Not entirely sure it’ll ever shed all of the eccentricities and be less exotic.
