Sami-Odi

Little Wine #11 Syrah

My first Little Wine #11 from Sami Odi. An unvintaged assembly of casks from 2021 (46%); 2020 (18%); 2019 (16%); 2018 (2%); 2017 (9%); 2016 (5%); & 2015 (4%). The multi vintage adoption adds different dimensions - quite unique. The wine is a deep Ruby with a youthful purple tinge. Light in that it dances on the palate but there is no escaping that profound palate intensity from those old vines. Dark and luscious fruits. Blueberries and blackberries. Little Wine is meant to be drunk young, even Fraser says that, but can be cellared. Fresh, intense and powerful. I have drunk older Little Wines and the premium Cuvée but have found the extra cellar time doesn’t add the expected complexity. I have a bottle of Baby Tui, surprisingly all from the excellent 2012 vintage to put this cellaring idea to the test at some stage in the future. — a month ago

Our first ten years Hoffman Dallwitz Syrah 2016

2016 Sami-Odi ‘Hoffmann Dallwitz’ Syrah. 8 hour decant. Massive nose. Explosive mid-palate. Phenomenally silky texture. Smooth tannins. Stop watch still running on the finish. Just beautiful! And much more open for business than I expected. @Fraser McKinley has it goin on! Label: ‘Our first ten years’ – Painted by Andrea McKinley 1980, Fraser McKinley 1984-1988, Tui McKinley 2014-2016, Mahé & Ribo McKinley 2017. — 6 years ago

Baby Tui Syrah 2012

This wine need decanting maybe 4 hours. When opened at the beginning rather harsh and bitter muted taste. The the strong red fruit and rhubhart emerge and then more black fruit, eculpytus and earth taste. At the end it become a much better wine — 3 years ago

SA 54-354 Hoffman Dallwitz Syrah 2016

Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah 2016. This wine is a beast and will benefit greatly from some cellar time, but I can’t seem to keep my hands off. A triple decant along with 6 hours in the decanter at cellar temperature. I should have poured it on a cookie sheet with a couple of industrial fans blowing on it. All that said, the wine is spectacular and reminds me of my favorite Sami-Odi, “Baby Tui.” @Fraser McKinley. The Manfred Krankl Of Australia! What more can I say? — 6 years ago

Couple fun bottles shared with Mark and Bryan this afternoon.

Sami Odi wines...a true favorite of mine! Bryan was kind enough to bring an older bottle when he came to town and what a powerhouse. Upon opening, it had a slight carbonic nose to it with gummy and candied fruits, but after letting it sit open for a few hours, the evolution here was remarkable. Blind, this bordered on SQN. It shows this beautifully spicy and savory nose that SQN wines always strut, with peppercorn, grilled rhubarb, smoked brisket and a touch of green olive. As all Sami Odi wines are, the texture on the palate is so pure. Fresh squeezed blackberries dripping over bacon, herbs de Provence, teriyaki, and fresh mixed berry pie out of the oven. A supreme balance of spicy, savory and rich notes. What a wine!
@Fraser McKinley , you knocked this out of the park!

I really think I got the short end of the stick of this one, because according to Shay it had a little bit of stage fright.

Sami-Odi

Mahe & Ribo Syrah

2015 Sami-Odi 'Mahé & Ribo' Syrah. Let me just cut to the chase and tell you that this is the best showing to date which makes me want to lock this stuff away and hide the key. Same goes for Baby Tui (I’m down to my last two Fraser!). Midnight ruby in color. Floral aromas of fresh cut violets. Dark fruits with notes of plums, blueberry, anise, sandalwood, and spices. Medium–bodied with smooth tannins and bright acidity. French oak tones. This Wine possesses a subtle savouriness and an extra silky texture that just pushes all my buttons. Mr. McKinley has a deft touch reminiscent of one Manfred Krankl, a gentleman of whom’s work I am particularly fond. Apply for list membership now or forever hold your peace. — 7 years ago

@Shay Aldriedge Thanks for your comments. I’m just the messenger here. @Fraser McKinley ‘s wines speak for themselves. Fraser’s been underrated, in my opinion, for quite a while now. I hope you enjoy his wines as much as I do. Fraser is a talented guy.
