Turley used Spenker fruit from 96-97 and this was Biale's first turn with the 1902-planted vineyard, which they made wine from until 2004. This is on the downturn, but still has plenty of fruit/spice along with more tertiary qualities and was a very enjoyable quaff. Would have liked to try it young. Looks like the fruit is now going primarily to estate wines which are not very highly regarded. — 9 years ago
Fruit forward and super delicious — 11 years ago
We found this quite by accident at a local Grocery Outlet. Noticed it was 19 years old and bought it on a lark. It was good! A little acidic but full of flavor. — 4 years ago
Cinsault - 130+ year old vines
Organic, unfiltered, nouveau style, 12.5% abv. Body is light, red fruit, med acid, some tannin, good food wine, spring picnic and warm weather red. On second day of being opened, more fruity raspberry notes appeared.
From website:
Twenty-five acre own-rooted Bechthold vineyard, planted in 1886 by German immigrant Joseph Spenker, is the oldest continuously farmed vineyard in Lodi.
Nestled in the Mokelumne River area of Lodi, the organically dry farmed vineyard with head-trained vines is believed to be the world’s oldest surviving Cinsault vineyard. — 5 years ago
The vines for this wine were planted in 1886 in the heart of western Lodi by Joseph Spenker and farmed for decades by Al Bechthold. Now, under the care of the Phillips family, this vineyard is providing the material for this beautiful wine from Tegan and Olivia Passalaqua. Possibly the most striking magenta color I have ever beheld in a wine. Gorgeous aromatics of bruised Red Delicious apple, red cherries and...even a touch of the stickiest of the icky? On the palate, it’s red cherries, plums, watermelon and violet pastilles. This wine stimulates the mind in the most wonderful of ways. A svelte 12.3% ABV, I’m completely smitten. While there is balance and structure to last for several years, this is too delightful to not drink now. — 5 years ago

A blend in three equal parts of Cinsault from the Bechthold Vineyard (1886), Carignane from Spenker Ranch (1900) and Zinfandel from Kirschenmann Vineyard (1915).
Popped and poured; consumed over three days. Consistent throughout but probably showed best on day three. The 2022 Lodi pours, a deep ruby color with a transparent core and a slightly watery rim. Medium viscosity, with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine youthful and expressive with notes of black bramble fruit, blueberries, soft red flowers, red rope licorice, and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry; medium tannins and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is lengthy and full of minerals and wow, it is juicy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Tegan is redefining Lodi. These wines show so much character and yet have all the Lodi DNA. Drink now and through 2032. 40 barrels produced. — 8 months ago
