Magnificent, deeply traditional Barolo. The nose opens with burning embers, campfire, road tar, dried roses and a huge range of savory exotic spice, then grows more loamy with air, bringing in wood shavings, old library books and classic Nebbiolo earthiness. The palate is dazzlingly concentrated but beautifully controlled, with exquisite red fruit, layers of cherry, superb linearity and wonderfully articulated tannins. Dense without heaviness, elegant despite the power, and architecturally complete. The finish is extraordinarily long and saturated with fruit, tannin and mineral detail. Already a superb Barolo, with obvious 9.7 upside as it continues to open.

After an hour and a half, this has gone to another level. The nose is now wildly floral and almost four-dimensional, with extraordinary depth and perfume, easily 9.7 to 9.8 aromatically. The palate has become even more beautiful, juicy and seamless, with velvety, sweet tannins and incredible tiny-berry fruit intensity. The structure is still serious, but everything is now more integrated and complete. 9.6 to 9.7. — 7 days ago

Velvety from start to finish but not too heavy. I must have had a different vintage versus others below because I felt subtle acid made for a good mouthfeel - so soft on the palate it was a pleasure to drink. Recommended as a substitute for another Lange Nebbiolo and didn’t disappoint. — 2 years ago

Hard to believe this is 19-yr old Dolcetto. Earthy stewy cherry with nice acids and soft soft mouthfeel. Shows its age in some ways but also feels strangely timeless - like a pretty older woman who’s never had any work done. — 7 years ago

Very traditional nose at first, with wet earth, dirt, mint, spice and wildflowers, with very little obvious fruit. The palate is much richer, with deep dark ripe fruit, excellent freshness and energy, and a beautifully full mid-palate. The tannins build with air but stay ripe, chewy and velvety. Very complete, beautifully balanced and long. Fantastic Barbera, with room to move higher. Also the acidity is just incredible. — 13 days ago

Extremely unusual and completely charming. The nose has all the aromatic DNA of sweet Brachetto, with candied raspberry, confectionery sugar and citrus rind, but also desiccated leaves, a little wool and a bright, savory, almost woodland quality. The palate is dry, juicy and teeming with energy, with light raspberry fruit, citrus, excellent freshness and a texture that sits somewhere between red wine and rosé. Fun, distinctive and wonderfully refreshing, especially served slightly cool. A terrific antipasto wine. — 21 days ago

Starts off enormous and almost brutally structured, with dark black cherry and blackberry fruit, wood shavings, clove, cardamom and cinnamon, then really transforms with a few hours of air. The nose opens into this gorgeous spicy perfume and becomes unmistakably Freisa. Palate is huge but never heavy, with a massive fruit soak, excellent freshness, terrific juiciness, nice opulence, and big ripe tannins that gradually calm down and fold into the wine. Still rustic and powerful rather than elegant, but beautifully balanced and completely unique. Great wine. — 21 days ago
