Clos Fourtet

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 2005 Clos Fourtet is a dramatic, sweeping Saint-Émilion endowed with tremendous depth and unctuous intensity. Dark cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco and woodsmoke build as this rapturous, deeply textured wine shows off its allure. Silky, plush and wonderfully expressive, Clos Fourtet is fabulous in 2005. Bright saline notes, that are such a signature of Saint-Émilion's plateau, balance all of the natural richness of the year. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to another several decades of exceptional drinking. This is a superb effort from the Cuvelier family. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2021)

Gratallops Vi de Vila Priorat Grenache Blend 2014

As I sat in @Joan Pierson kitchen a shell of my former self thanks to an aggressive tasting the night before, I shakingly held the glass to my nose and was rewarded immediately with cola, coffee and chocolate. Some red fruit especially cherries crawling behind, struggling to catch up similar to myself at this tasting. A high character wine for my low character self as I threw up the white flag and slunk back to my bed. — 7 years ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Château Léoville Poyferré 2014
Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France 🇫🇷

Overview
A distinguished Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) from Saint-Julien, Château Léoville Poyferré has been elevated under the stewardship of the Cuvelier family and Michel Rolland’s consultancy. The 2014 vintage is a classic Bordeaux blend comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This cooler year yielded wines with notable polish, freshness, and age-worthy structure.

Aromas & Flavors
Expressive and refined, the bouquet opens with blackcurrant, cassis, and plum, framed by cedar, graphite, violets, and aromatic spice. The palate is layered with ripe red and dark fruits, along with hints of tobacco, pepper, and soft oak—a harmonious reflection of balanced ripeness and terroir depth.

Mouthfeel
Medium to full-bodied, with smooth yet structured tannins and vivid acidity. The finish is long and mineral-tinged, echoing Saint-Julien’s limestone terroir while expressing both strength and grace.

Winemaking Notes
Vinified traditionally and aged in French oak barrels (predominantly new), the 2014 benefits from meticulous attention to extraction and maturation, resulting in elegant concentration and finesse.

Food Pairing
Wonderful with roast lamb, herb-crusted beef, or rich mushroom dishes. Decanting for an hour enhances its layered complexity.

Verdict
A classic expression of Left Bank finesse and depth, Château Léoville Poyferré 2014 strikes an artful balance between fruit, structure, and refinement. Enjoy now with decanter or cellar it to explore its evolution over the next decade.Cheers!

Château Poujeaux

Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. A strong effort for this estate, bought in 2008 by the Cuvelier family (Clos Fourtet, Grandes Murailles, Côte Baleau). Much more intensity and complexity compared to the 2015 tasted alongside (but maybe I should try another bottle of the 2015). Cassis, flowers and lead pencil. Medium-bodied, juicy and fresh with very good mineral length. — 5 years ago

Murrieta's Well

The Spur Livermore Valley Red Blend 2015

Shay A
9.2

I’ve started seeing quite a bit of this winery on Delectable as of late, and @Jason Oliver does a great job of being an ambassador for them. He informed me of a killer deal they had going, so I snagged a 3-pack.

Robbie Meyer (of Del Dotto, Pierson Meyer) became the full time winemaker in 2015. The Spur is their red blend and really is an awesome value for Livermore Valley. Bordeaux varietals + petite sirah. Super dark in the glass. Nose is full of herbs, crushed blackberries, graphite. I thought it would be super heavy on the palate due to the color, but it was soft. Easy to pick up the petite sirah in this with the spice and pepper on the finish. Tart and spicy fruit too like rhubarb. Smokiness and cedar wood. Looking forward to the merlot and Malbec I have.

@Mark Flesher let's just say... I'd recommend murrieta's well, steven kent, occasio, nottingham, mckahn, kalin (no tasting room) and wente. And prospect 772 is a sierra foothills winery that makes black tie charlie (petite sirah from livermore).

Peirson Meyer

Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2020

2020. The Pierson Meyer Sonoma Chardonnays I’ve loved have all had several years of age on them, so this recent release has a little different balance of oak, fruit, and acidity. The more of everything currently showing this wine probably helped it pair well with a curried squash soup. — 2 years ago

Château Le Crock

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. Owned by the Cuvelier family (Léoville-Poyferré). Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%). Super ripe black fruit with a powerful ripe tannic structure. profound and long. More sensual than most in Saint-Estèphe and another great 2019. Abv. 14%. Highly recommended. — 4 years ago

Château Côte de Baleau

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2013

This estate was bought in 2013 by the Cuvelier family (Clos Fourtet and Poujeaux), but the previous owner Sophie Fourcade already made great efforts to improve the wines. This 2018 features a deep red colour, a flamboyant perfume with truffle, red fruit and flowers. Concentrated, with layers of red fruit and spices and a serious tannic structure. Good length too. As this estate (promoted to Grand Cru Classé in the 2012 classification) is still very much under the radar it is great value and worth seeking out for less than 25 euros. — 5 years ago

Migration (Duckhorn Vineyards)

Charles Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

The Migration label first appeared in 2001 as the second label of Goldeneye, both under the Duckhorn masthead, first focusing on Pinot Noir and later adding Chardonnay. Like Paraduxx to Duckhorn, it is no longer a second label, but a winery unto itself. In 2008 Migration, and by extension, Duckhorn, produced its first Chardonnay. In 2009 they produced their first Chardonnay from the legendary Charles Heintz Vineyard. The Charles Heintz Vineyard is located just outside of the town of Occidental where Charlie’s family has farmed the land for over 100 years. Two ridges in, and only about 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard is situated in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. Heintz has become one of the most famous Chardonnay sites in California, with notable producers including Ceritas, DuMol, Freeman, Flowers, L'Angevin, Kosta Browne, Littorai, Migration/Duckhorn, Moone-Tsai, Pierson Meyer, and Williams Selyem. With its classic Goldridge sandy loam soils, and located just above the fog line, the vineyard receives abundant sunshine and cool ocean breezes. Super mellow Chardonnay, with candied orchard fruit, honeysuckle, wet stone, and some secondary hazelnut, with just a flutter of mushroom in the background. — 9 years ago

Wow. Didn't know they worked with Heintz. One of my favorite small producers, Montagu Wines, has a Heintz chard coming out in a year or two. Their Durell vineyard and Ritchie vineyard (with the help of Russell Bevan on the Richie one) have been outstanding. Looking forward to trying Heintz.
