Oyster Bay

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Classic NZ label. Smells funky. Lawn just cut or a piece of fresh grass in the teeth. And lemon citrus peels. Flavors are complex and very audacious. Bombastic even. Plenty of citrus, but something else as well. Shells? Like the calcium carbonate in those. Also big gooseberries. This is a good example of how NZ Sauv Blanc differs from the other styles out there. This wine packs a punch. — 11 hours ago

Lots of tropical fruit along with grapefruit. Delicious with food - reminded me of when I visited the winery nearly 20 years ago. — 10 days ago

Kumeu River

Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Mates Vineyard is considered the best of the Kumeu River Chardonnay Cuvées but to be honest they are all delicious. This has such stone fruit intensity on the palate together with ripe grapefruit and Cashew. All in balance and drinking superbly. An outstanding new world Chardonnay. A few years left in its drinking window. It will always have that superb fruit and will develop a little more complexity - have the last 2019 in a year or two. — 17 days ago

@Ira Schwartz Not overly, a bit of funk there, but the palate intensity was such that perhaps it could stand a decant?

Cottesbrook

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Wonderful Sauvignon Blanc! Great acid, nice grassy nose. This wine smells of burnt rubber, under ripe pears lime and the famous cat pee. This is a really enjoyable wine! — 17 days ago

Tart - Apple/grapefruit taste. Excellent with cheese and crackers. Roast pork with a pear based sauce and roasted carrots. Very enjoyable! — 12 days ago

Giant Steps

Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

See previous notes 20 weeks ago and 79 weeks ago. My last bottle of the 2016 GS Applejack Pinot Noir. The pale colour belies the strength of the palate. Quite delicious in fact. . Applejack Vineyard probably my favourite of the Giant Steps Cuvées. Red fruited - succulent savoury red cherry. — a month ago

@Bob McDonald thanks for the rec: had a lovely tasting there! We tasted through all the 22 PNs. For another data point: my wife and I both preferred the Wombat to the Applejack. Our favorite PN of the tasting was the Tasmanian Fatal Shore!

@Aravind A I can’t disagree with your preference for The Fatal Shore. Under the new ownership of the Jackson Family the style may change a little from the fabulous winemaking of Steve Flamsteed. My recollection of the Wombat Creek was perhaps the use of more whole bunch in the ferment. They are all very good.

Nocton Vineyard is also great.

Medium straw in color; passionfruit, jasmine, and white peaches on the nose; high acidity; tastes like guava, lemon, pear, and kiwi with a long fruity finish. Nellie likes it and I love it! — a month ago
