Die Ouwingerdreeks Skerpioen Chenin Blanc Palomino 2021

One of my all time favourites.

Last one of 2021 left in the collection. Fell in love with this wine in 2022 during a dinner at La Colombe. Great characterful wine from the west coast. You can taste it’s origin in the briny/kelp like taste with a bit of stone fruit, chamomille/jasmine and a touch of fennel/anise. Always a bit lower on the alcoho and acidityl, which makes it a great early drinker. Can’t wait to try the 2024 with 99 points.

Osawa Wines

Prestige Collection Pinot Noir 2017

Thought this blind was an aged red burg, so colour me surprised when it was revealed to be a young NZ pinot. Clearly a little more developed than it should be (colour and aromas), but credit where credit’s due, this was quite elegant. Even after the reveal I could not detect that marmalade finish I find so often in NZ pinot’s. This was all red cherries and ripe strawberries, with savoury spices and earthy notes. Perhaps the quality of the oak, which left much to be desired, and rich velvety texture were the only indications of it’s origin. Finished a touch short. There were wines with more intrigue on the table so I didn’t drink much of it, but it definitely wasn’t a bad drop. One to revisit. — 3 years ago

Peach, pear, and tangerine over orange blossom and jasmine. Slightly sweet but still acidic enough to balance a cheeseboard or meal. — a year ago

Louis Roederer

Collection 243 Brut Champagne Blend

An attractive pale gold color with highly active perlage. Very typically Louis in every way. Warm brioche and an abundance of yellow fruit aromas initially. Apples and dandelions with a nice whiff of honey. Strawberries and a little bit of chalk.

The numbered collection series from Louis Roederer continues to impress. Based on the 2018 vintage with a generous amount of reserve wines. Baronial but zesty with terrific balance and structure. Obviously young but there’s plenty of potential for this to develop down the road.

Inviting and thrilling in the mouth. Biscuits and apple with plenty of lemon zest. Just a bit of oak and dried herbs. A lovely, lovely champagne and one that I’ll keep coming back to.
