Blinded, KP thought this was a Grenache which I felt was an excellent guess due to the ripeness and structure of the wine (notably, “Grenache” would only have led us down the path towards one producer 😉). Plus, I honestly think Grenache is just warm-climate Pinot 😂 (there I said it!).
With Grenache ruled out, I gave perhaps my best performance in a blind tasting during the trip - Burg, at least a premier cru from Morey or Gevrey, and a warm vintage (2000 I claimed!). Safe to say I got pretty close.
With games done and dusted, we were finally free to enjoy the wine, and what a wine it was. Boah! So good. My red and wine of the night. Terrific nose of dark cherries, earth, musk, black tea, dried roses and herbs, as well a touch of oak spice and meatiness. Powerful palate with an inner sweetness, assertive stoniness, and beautiful balancing acidity. It just caresses your mouth with layers of fruit and minerals, prompting the next sip before the brain could even register swallowing the last. I could chug this really, but that would be uncouth and a terrible disrespect to the wonderful nose. A wine that fits the coveted bill of “power with weight” perfectly. New dmgcc house cab- very good had after golf with mj — 10 months ago
Burgel study courtesy of FK and MJ. I thought this was the better of the two wines, mainly because it was more complete at this stage. Time has brought about that inner sweetness, mineral backbone, black tea notes, and just that touch of sous bois which I really enjoy. I'd prefer a little more red fruit and more oak to shed away, but overall it was drinking well. — 2 years ago
First Chappellet wine. Dark color. Like violets and dark crimson rose petals with a sheen and sparkle. Smells ripe with plums and fresh herbs. Flavor is classic Napa, but complex and silky smooth like an MJ fall-away. Very drinkable and soft for a 2018. It’s got a dark chocolate and cola element as well. It’s very good, just expected it to be a bit more dynamic. It’s good with food. — 4 years ago

Blinded, everyone agreed this was Burgundian but had their own ideas on village, vintage, and producer. No one figured out it was from Vosne - perhaps it just lacked the hallmark perfume and exoticism one might think of in Vosne (once more, the fallacy of generalisation in wine). MR was spot on with vintage though, and he was insistent about it due to that touch of austerity in the finish he typically finds in 08’s. As for producer, only MJ thought of Cathiard once the village was established. I was tossing between Mugneret-Gibourg (KP rebuts not sexy enough) and Meo (again KP rebuts not bright enough). What a tough blind by KP!
The wine itself was powerful and concentrated, with lots of mid-palate density, yet as MR observed, a tight finish. Flavours-wise, it featured heaps of red and black fruits (leaning more towards the latter) and some noticeable oak (though not decadent - nice quality!), as well as some earth and meat which probably threw me off in the blind. Having said that, the Vosne origin may have been linked to via the finish which had ample spice notes. A silky texture, lovely mineral undertow and tight acidity wraps up the wine. Really excellent wine but the pieces have yet to fall together to maximise drinkability. One to keep your hands off for now. — 2 years ago
