Kékfrankos Vári Dulo 2020

Kristinus, kékfrankos, Vári single vineyard 2020.
A single vineyard kékfrankos made in a very natural, low intervention way in the region of Lake Balaton (Balatonboglár). 6-year old and still very youthful and almost a bit austere, closed down. It needs time in the glass to open up and become gentler. The nose shows cherry and raspberry notes, along with blood orange zest and a bit of a green touch, green bell pepper, and a bit of leather. The palate is acid-driven, with lively tannins in the rear, there are nice red fruit notes, some width, a bit of matter on the sides, the tannins leave a significantly drying layer over a moderately long finish with fruit, a bit of savoury touch and a zesty, bitter note. Good stuff!

Euphoria Red Blend 2016

Hungarian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the native Kekfrankos (Blaufrankish) grape. Deep purple color with some periwinkle highlights. Nose is quite herbal combined with sour cherry and Forrest Floor. Pallet is dark cherry driven with hints of plum, blackberry, graphite, spices, leather and vanilla. Great complexity. High acidity, full bodied and medium tannins. Well balanced. — 4 years ago

Liquid Sunshine Chardonnay Szürkebaràt 2021

Wow, what a ride. Skin contact chard from Hungary with addition of barrel fermented Szürkebarát (pinot gris). The nose is very interesting and inviting with almost a botrytis scent to it, along with apricot, honey, tangerine peel, a bit of leather too. Wow this is not super clean but it's super complex. The palate shows some acid drive, some tannic structure as could be expected for a skin contact wine (24 days in clay amphoras for the chardonnay), apricot, honey touches, a bit of a round mid palate with those tannins before a rather long, slightly drying finish with that honey, apricot note that goes on for ever. This is definitely a style of wine which is not for everyone but it's one of the better structured orange wines I've had. Think radikon from Hungary (for a nicer price tag). 14% abv — a year ago

It's a fun wine and it's really well made. I picked a bottle of white Radikon along this one, hence the mention.

"Analóg" White Blend 2021

McCarthy & Schiering, $19

Rich in color, pale yellow/golden, nose of honey, gooseberries, and a slight spicy funk that reminds me of orange wines, but I don't know if this has skin contact or not. Tropical and fresh, like unripe pineapple, and tangerine, really nice acidity, and a slightly green note on the finish. Absolutely loved this wine!
