Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2014

Lemon yellow in colour. Stone fruit (peach) and melon notes; medium to full bodied palate - low acid. A delicious Hunter Valley Chardonnay showing its warmer climate origins from the excellent 2014 vintage. A creamy leesy peachy luscious Chardonnay still producing the requisite acid cut. A pity there is not more of this made with a wider distribution. — 2 months ago

Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon 2011

A mid straw yellow in colour. Aromas are lemon and lime, lemongrass, mineral, wet hay with toastiness and lanolin starting to emerge at 13 years of age. Light bodied but great intensity - a richer texture for a Semillon, bearing in mind that this wine sees no oak at all - stainless steel all the way. Only 11% alcohol. Luckily I have 4 bottles left - a cellar life extending to 2030+. — 7 months ago

Vat 47 Hunter Chardonnay 2018

Oak, lime like herb in aroma. Rich, citrus, white flowers. Citrus, comfortable acidity. Each factor in the taste is showing the feature clearly. From Hunter valley which is an initial place for wine in Australia. Vat 47 Hunter Chardonnay Tyrrell’s 2018 @7546, Toscany JH, 231028-231111 — 2 years ago

Hunter Valley Shiraz 2018

First Australian Shiraz I have had in ages. It was recommended as an exception to the usual 16% bruisers that we’ve all encountered. This one at 13.5% was super juicy - bursting with black and blue berries, slight forest floor, and wet concrete. Medium acid and tannin, with a fresh finish. I doubt I would have called Syrah if had blind, this comes across as just well made and balanced red wine. Simple but with impressive purity of fruit. — 3 years ago

Maurice O'Shea Hunter Valley Shiraz 1998

Even though this wine is 27 years old I might have opened this a little early. This will cruise to its 40th birthday without a problem. This was the period when Hunter Valley decided to emulate the big ripe oaky styles of South Australia instead of sticking to the HV medium bodied savoury style which Maurice O’Shea himself pioneered back in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. A palate staining and concentrated palate of profound intensity with a black fruited perfume. An impressive wine but thankfully the Maurice O’Shea Shiraz of the last 10 to 15 years have returned to their medium bodied roots. — 3 months ago

Lindeman's

Hunter River Burgundy Shiraz 1991

I’ve been fascinated by these older Lindemans bottlings ever since my first one aeons ago. Low octane, high acid Hunter shiraz with a confused identity makes for a rather interesting drink and table convo. The only thing Burgundian about it was the colour. Haha.

My first bottle of this 91’ Bin 8203 was unfortunately on the cusp of death. I decided to pop open another one and thankfully, second time’s a charm. Shitty cork still, but the wine poured out in great shape. Sweet red fruits, almost like preserved cherries; floral, leathery, and a touch spicy, with a juicy, silky palate. Quite a treat!

I love this wines! They opened a different perspective on Oz wines to me when i discovered them. Definitely not Burgundy like, but with defined personality.

Chatto Wines

Pinot Noir 2018

Notes of Toffee Apple initially - a little reductive to begin with. Pale dirty crimson - transparent in parts - quite Burgundian in colour. A light to medium weight palate but Medium intensity. Like a good Village, verging on Premier Cru. Interesting and tasty but needing about 4 or 5 years more to develop complexity. Jim Chatto is regarded as one of Australia’s best winemakers having been in charge at Mt Pleasant in the Hunter Valley and now running his own show in Tasmania. — 3 years ago

Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1 2017

Pale lemon straw . Quite cool and citrus , lime nose , touch of spicy herbal hints , but quite reserved and understated . On the palate this is really direct and linear , lime and slightly honied , cool green apple , lightly toasty , lightly waxy finish . Sharp piercing acidity . Very elegant and long on the palate , light weight but intense at the same time , really quite a feat to carry off . Just a baby , enjoyable yes , but this has so little development , so fresh needs a little time in bottle to fill out on the palate . I would probably come back in 5 - 10 years , will probably last another 10-15 effortlessly — 4 months ago

A great choice Andrew. These Vat 1’s live for ages. Will develop toast, honey and a waxy lanolin like texture. Puts on weight. Amazing for a wine that sees no oak. I have several bottles from 2011 I am looking forward to. Another terrific Hunter Valley Sem to try is McWilliams Lovedale - also Brokenwood.

Yes , truly great wines @Bob McDonald , have had the Lovedale in the UK , lucky to pick up some 2014 from Lay & Wheeler. And unbelievably at the local Total Wine here in Orlando managed to pick up a bottle of some Brokenwood 2016 Oakey vineyard …. Last bottle

Hunter Valley Sémillon 2022

Ming L
9.0

The nose is reminiscent of a SB with nice mix of citrus, tropical, and melon fruits with hint of hay. The initial entry feels like a Chablis that’s acidic and steely, but the body gains weight in the glass and there is hint of sweetness and white floral toward the finish.
Not much experience with 100% Semillon, but this is very nice.

Elegant white blend of Albariño and other less well known white grape varietals. Nice and refreshing. Will definitely be a regular in the rotation. — 2 years ago
