Sweet red and dark fruits on the nose. Medium bodied with fine dusty tannins. Superb — 10 years ago
Good old fashioned Chardonnay without being too wooded. — 11 years ago
Fabulous layers of silky tannins burst onto the palate with rich berry flavours
Consistently rated highly (97 & 98 pts) by Western Australian specialists it is probably little known outside Australia.
It’s from Franklin River and not the better known Margaret River region.
Named after the winemaker responsible for 51 vintages of this masterpiece it’s a testament to his craftsmanship.
The 2021 is James Halliday’s Australian wine of 2025.
I think this is better.

Clear, deep garnet colour. Clean, pronounced black fruit and cedar aromas. Dry, medium acidity and tannins that are very balanced. Medium bodied with long finish. Black fruits with hints of cassis, mocha and lovely oak flavours. An outstanding wine considering the price. Went very well with bbq rib eye. — 6 years ago
Wife loved it and she's not a red drinker. — 9 years ago

Starts sweet and then the freshness leads the whole game. Incredibly enjoyable.🇦🇺👍 — 10 years ago
I loved this wine - tasted in a lineup of three lesser known Aussie Chardonnays - this was the most austere and "Burgundian" of the three - restrained but beautifully balanced fruit, oak and mineral — 11 years ago
I have several previous notes for this 2010 and a couple for 2008. Houghton I believe is possibly the oldest winery in WA based in the Swan River on the outskirts of Perth. Established in 1836. It would be many years later before wine was being produced in Margaret River. However the grapes for this Cabernet came from Margaret River. As I said see previous notes but I did love Gary Walsh’s review of this wine from the “Winefront” when he said “Sends the Cabernet enthusiasts among us just a little bit wild.” — a year ago
Full bodied, nice deep, dense colour. Subtle spice and more of a savoury flavour. Delicious — 3 years ago
Almost syrupy in consistancy, this has a rich passionfruit taste on the palate which matches its tropical aromas — 9 years ago
Fruity. All too easy to drink. — 10 years ago
Beam me forward 10 yrs pls so I can enjoy this with some cellar time. Dark tarry fruit with lively acidity and fine strong tannins that drive a long dry finish. 6 hour decant and it was only just opening up. Next day was at its best. — 10 years ago
Very good. Really enjoyed this wine. Berry flavors very strong. — 12 years ago
