Raul Pérez

Ultreia La Claudina Bierzo Godello 2020

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. Although this is Godello from Bierzo, this was meant to be a fun counter example to Sketch which is arguably a bit unique when it comes to Raul Pérez’s typical style. The 2020 “La Claudina” pours a deeper straw color with notes of lemons, grapefruit, Brazil nuts, hazel nuts (yeah, it’s definitely more in the oxidative style) and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and saline with a slightly sherried, creamy texture. Charming stuff and definitely something I would like to track over time. Enjoy now through 2035. — 2 years ago

Beaune-Grèves 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2011

Rustic, earthy, succulent but never clumsy or overbearing. This has soul and that distinct “nourishing” character one finds in the great traditional wines of the world. Muddled cherry, wet leaves, damp forest, ceps, juniper, witch hazel, wilted flowers, beets, warm spice. — 6 years ago

Saumur Chenin Blanc 2016

Damp earth, chesnut, witch hazel, spring flowers, spring greens, crisp pear, lemon peel, quinche, salted ham, flint, green tea. A riot of acid and waxy chenin richness, impeccable balance. First time getting this wine in the glass with some bottle age 😍 — 6 years ago

Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay 2017

A great mix of fatty yellow fruit (pineapple) and toasty new oak on nose (hazel), hinting full-body and richness, but instead delivering freshness, minerality and a much more elegant, lean palate.
Very likeable.

Begins with oak, transitions to strawberry and finishes with slight hazel nut and vanilla. Earthy and complex. Subtle tannins. Would go well with smoked Gouda, cheesecake and anything chocolate. Was superb with meat sauce. — 8 years ago

Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 1995

Golden. Ripe nose with hints of oak, hazel and walnut, chalk dust, persimmon, cedar, smoky flinty notes indicative of Chablis. Beautifully chiseled, delineated structure. Bright acidity with a long finish of baked apple and smoky flint. Marvelous! 97p — 9 years ago

Malvazija Pivol 2017

Amazing Wine ! This is a gorgeous wine . The color is golden yellow . The nose is full of rich , ripe apricots and peaches with a whiff of wild honey and toasted hazel nuts . The wine drinks very much as is on the nose , but with a zest of salinity . This a fruit forward wine that with excellent minerality ! It borders on excellence with this kind of elegance , power and depth . Most surprising is it’s complexity . This makes it extremely unique . Albeit a big wine , the drinkability is very good . I would suggest that it pairs just as beautifully with lobster and crab as it does with a prime , double cut , grilled pork chop ! At $35 -$40 dollars this wine is most definitely a steal . The QPR ( Quality to Price Ratio ) Makes this one of the biggest steals in the wine world today . I love it ! — 7 years ago
