Château Roquegrave

Cru Bourgeois Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. Contrary to common belief, Bordeaux offers many incredible value wines. This is a new discovery from the northern Médoc, recommended by the maître de chai from a very famous Cru Classé (I plead guilty for never having driven further north than Saint-Estèphe yet). Had an extensive tasting with owner and winemaker Pierre-Yves Joannon, and he is one of the most amazing wine producers I have met in Bordeaux. He has incredible stories about every wine, innovative design, and makes both innovative and more classic Médoc wines that sell for a song. This Roquegrave delivers a lot of pleasure for little money. ABC. 13,5% — a year ago

Mylonas

Savatiano 2020

Sea breeze, lemon verbena, green melon, mineral (hint of flunky) and an almond/vanilla note.

Greek salad was one of the first foods I learned to “cook” for myself, and it’s still a go to for me: salty, crisp, simple, refreshing, much like this delightful Greek wine. And most of the time, that’s more than enough. Made from the much maligned Savatiano grape (for its unfortunate association with retsina). It reminds me more of a Gavi, (lower acid) Chablis, or Soave than Assyrtiko.

Also, the bird on the label is wearing a bowler hat which is fun.

Domaine de Bonserine

La Sarrasine Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2018

Already very balanced although still young. Association of Power and Finesse The fruit is still marked with well-melted light notes of oak. Deep concentrated notes of smoked ham, primary peppery and violette notes. Classic style. Beautiful gourmandise that will gain in wisdom with several years of cellar. 😋

This is deliciously soothing. Honey on burnt toast and raspberry jam. A non-guilty pleasure for a time when you feel perpetually guilty for not feeling guilty every second of every day about what’s happening. Escapist wine from Puglia. Purchase again as a buffer against evil. A high scorer from Eataly, I think. D: Very cherry, berry, boldish, Polish (?), spicy, ratty, matty, oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen. — 8 years ago

Wittmann

Morstein Großes Gewächs Riesling 2021

Weingut Wittmann is a longstanding member of the VDP – an association of quality-minded producers in Germany who impose upon themselves more rigorous rules than are imposed under German wine law, in pursuit of excellence, authenticity, & a purity of terroir expression.

This is the “GG” 2021 Wittmann Morstein Riesling, made with fruit from a Große Lage-designated vineyard site (i.e., Morestein) pursuant to the VDP classification system, which means it’s a top quality site, akin to a “grand cru” vineyard in Burgundy, capable of producing fruit for age-worthy wines of distinction.

We’re drinking it in a youthful (and still delicious!) state now – stored in the right conditions, it could age for a decade+…

In appearance, this wine has a medium lemon hue with medium (+) intensity of precise and lifted aromas and flavors including white peach, apricot, mango, kumquat, green apple, lemon peel, lime zest, blossom, honeysuckle, wet slate, flint, oystershell, saline, and petrol notes.

The palate is bone dry with medium alcohol (12.5% ABV), a medium body, and racy acidity.

It’s elegant, angular, & nuanced.

We’re pairing it with grilled, spice-rubbed pork tenderloin and roasted brussels sprouts.

Cannonau di Sardegna 2018

Cannonau di Sardegna wines have been linked to heart health and have attracted attention for their association with longevity.
Cannonau grapes are thought to have originated on Sardinia and are the orgin of Grenache grapes. Taste the sunshine of Sardinia, red berries light finish of tannins and granite. Drink and repeat.

Bodegas Gutiérrez de la Vega

Casta Diva Cosecha Miel Alicante Muscat 2014

I ask for a sweet wine not from Jerez (Sherry) and she gives me a taste and says do you want a full glass? To this wine I say F*#& yes! Super acidity makes this drinkable as heck! Passion fruit, papaya, beeswax, honeysuckle and bitter orange notes on the nose and palate. Nice mouthfeel, with body yet super smooth. Paired with chocolate mousse and passion fruit ice cream, I am feeling extremely guilty and already planning my run for tomorrow morning! — 7 years ago

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 1997

Pancakes and Sauternes.
Two guilty pleasures.
Voluptuous nose on opening, wafting honey, beeswax, glue, apricotpreserve, molasses and that savoury twang I often pick up in mature Sauternes (something shrimpy/bacon-ey). Rounded and sweet in the mid-palate, getting more dry towards the finish which is starting to show a faint metallic note now, suggesting that this wine should be drunk earlier rather than later.
A very very fine example of aged Sauternes, though.

Celebrating our 29th Anniversary! I am so guilty of opening wines before recommendations.. but I absolutely have zero regrets on this one! I absolutely love this and a huge thank you to @Eric L. for his recommendation on this wine! So many nuances in this glass! Tar, molasses, smoke, expresso, dark berries, red raspberries, licorice, bay leaf, graphite and oak! Positive I could keep tasting and add more notes! Super happy with this wine! — 4 years ago

Vision Cellars

Pinot Noir 2018

Hey, Delectable— this is the Visions 2018 North Coast Pinot, but the ID wasn’t available.

Unabashedly ripe and warm, but with a distinctive umami flavor (hoisin sauce?) that I’m really digging. Black cherry, black plum and even blue fruit on the nose and palette. Lovely satiny texture. Medium + finish.

Hedonistic in the way you’d expect from a winemaker mentored by the Wagners, but the suppleness and umami notes make this wine stand out in a sea of north coast Pinot Noir, and the absence of new oak lets the fruit do the taking. Perfect with chicken lettuce wraps and haricot verts smothered in Madeira mushroom cream sauce.

Owner/founder, Mac Macdonald, has been making his own California Pinot Noir for more than 25 vintages now and it shows. Side note: he’s also one of the better story tellers in the biz.

Initially sampled as part of a tasting with the
#AAAV (Association of African American Vintners) and took the bottle home.

Was the cork crumbling a foreshadowing?? I zoned out for about 30 minutes watching American Ninja Warrior... which is probably best watched sober... it looks really easy when you're not.
