Costa Russi Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2021
This is not ready but showing well for only being open an hour and not decanted. It is a wine that really should not be opened until it has had 8-10 yrs plus in the cellar. Not as tight as I imagined but tight.
While it has firm, fine grain tannins. It also shows beautiful & elegance. This is aged in small barriques for 12 months and then another 12 months in large Slavonian casks.
Lightly tart & sour cherries, strawberries, plum, raspberries, dry cigar box, sun to fruit teas, soft old leather, limestone, dry crushed rocks, dry to moist herbs, some white & black pepper, grilled meats, barrel shavings, very light baking spices-clove, nutmeg, vanillin, beautiful Asian spices, some dark, dry soil, pink & red roses for days, beautiful acidity, excellent balance, mid structured-toned, great finesse, elegant finish that sneaks it way to a long even finish that sets on earth & barrel powder.

Sperss Langhe Nebbiolo 1996
Sperss is arguably Gaja’s most famous wine from Barolo. All of the fruit comes from Serralunga d’Alba, predominately the Marenca MGA with a little bit of Rivette. The 1996 Sperss was somewhat controversial as it became the first vintage (in a string of 17 vintages) that Gaja decided to blend in a small amount of co-fermented Barbera. This move required them to label the wine “Langhe Nebbiolo” instead of Barolo.
Poured into a decanter about an hour prior to service, enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1996 pours a deep garnet color with a translucent core; medium+ viscosity with faint staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still!) with notes of Morello cherry, tar, truffle, licorice, dried flowers, gravelly earth and fine warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long. This came across remarkably young. Drink now with patience through 2066. — 2 months ago

1997 vintage. From a 3L effort. Super youthful on this end with cool fruits and plenty of lushness and little tannic presence. In a 750ml format currently...likely at the top (or close) of the bell curve with properly cellared bottles. Medium-heavy body. Mint. General herbaceousness. Frontal richness. Valrhona chocolate. Almost plushy and seemingly eternal. In a 3L format, will outlive anyone reading this. Sorry, everyone. 10.23.26. — 12 days ago
