Winery notes
Syrah
The 2016 Judge Family Vineyard Syrah is sourced from the cold climate of the Bennett Valley of Sonoma. Meticulously farmed by Joe and Gail Judge, this rocky sloping vineyard planted on a mix of volcanic tufa, weathered stones, and clay, produces elegant and intensely aromatic Syrahs reminiscent of the great wines of Northern Rhone. Bennett Valley is a gently sloping elevated valley nestled between three mountain peaks in Sonoma County. Within the Sonoma Valley appellation
Sonoma Mountain and the Sonoma Coast, the well-drained mountain benchland soils combine with early morning fog and cool marine breezes to create ideal conditions for growing exceptional cool-climate varietals. The wine was cave aged in a combination of 78% used and 22% new French oak barrels for 20 months and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Had the rest today, it tightens up on day 2 . So hold this for awhile as you drink Paso juiceNapa. Great price! Delicious with Fish Chowder soup!!! ❤️ the wine and this niche place in Door County!!!! — 9 years ago
Pretty deep ruby garnet with garnet , terracotta . Quite sweet , spiced , dried fruit nose , slightly volatile nose . On the palate this is better , meaty and rich spiced dried dark fruits, plum , fig. Quite grippy tannins and balanced acidity . Good density and rich meaty finish , a little porty, pretty good length . Dense and rich , much more than expected . Still dense and really quite young, held up well in the glass , this would probably continue at this level for a further 5-10 years . — 2 years ago
I know everyone recognizes Gary’s vineyard for the Pinot grown here but to me it’s always been the Syrah that really shines at this address owned by Gary Francisoni and Gary Pisoni. Estrella Clone planted on the sandy arroyo seco loam, mid way down the Salinas valley in the santa Lucia highlands. This beauty shows a lot of blue fruit compote, bacon fat and sandal wood. It is beautifully composed and like most of the Pisoni wines, it really starts to shine around year five. Honestly California Syrah doesn’t get a lot better than this. — 3 years ago

Really enjoyed this! Enjoyed on September 2, 2019 — 7 years ago
2006 vintage. The unlabeled bottle on the left. This one is brandy fortified late harvest petite sirah. Very pleasant, styled much more like a traditional port than their regular late harvest petite sirah which is not fortified. Some heat evident here, though it doesn’t detract from the fruit. Smooth and sweet with a medium short finish. — 8 years ago

Raspberry, dark cherry, chocolate, dark plum, oak, and gun powder. Drink now with tertiary notes evident. High alcohol, medium plus tannins, medium plus body, high acid, and medium plus finish. About as good as a tannat gets, I think. — 6 days ago
