Second Effort Maury Sec Syrah Grenache 2021

This is a great value in a gutsy, balanced fall-weight red. 62% Grenache 38% Syrah. Nose shows rich Grenache raspberry liqueur/kirsch fruit. Terrific balance and concentration of flavor on the palate. Tannins surprisingly soft. The Grenache dominates here, with Syrah animal/mineral notes making an entrance in the second half of the finish. Impressed! This area in SW France is a source for value red. — 9 days ago

@Tom Casagrande, yes, Maury is NW of Perignan, about 35 miles from Banyuls. Fortified Vin Doux Naturel (same as Banyuls), at least 75% Grenache (not sure what Banyuls requires). Mas Amiel is the only brand I’ve tried (to me, it’s the Dr. Parce Banyuls comparison). Finally, I have a vague recollection that perhaps Michel Chapoutier might own/joint venture a property in the Maury AOC, but that’s my old man memory, so not sure.

@Tom Casagrande, scratch the Chapputier, actually they own Domaine de Bila-Haut, which produces (among other wines) Collioure and Banyuls.

@Tom Casagrande, and the third related region producing fortified vin Doux naturel (w/Grenache as its base) is Rivesaltes (just north of Perpignan), but cannot recall trying any of them. Incidentally, Banyuls/Maury are AMAZING matches with rich chocolate desserts, far better than Porto (IMHO) and Cabernet!!

9.3

fantastic find: was craving a legit southern French wine, something authentic w/plenty of terroir and this delivered. this is their cuvée called "Second Effort" which is only made in the best vintages: a deep dark ruby, the nose was gorgeous w/liqueur like red raspberry, black raspberry, cherry, blackberry then you get whiffs of white pepper, meat, mineral, dried herbs, savory, sweet Earth then the palate reflects the nose and was luscious, elegantly balanced w/a long lingering finish. — 3 months ago

First Things First Maury Sec Red Blend 2015

Mineralistic and spicy on the nose, with a hint of cherries and maybe even a bit of varnish. Tastes of dark chocolate and raspberries with a slight chalkiness. Medium to full bodied. Still young with strong tannins. — 6 years ago
