Castoro Cellars

Whale Rock Vineyard Reserve Pinot Noir 2016

14.3% alc/vol. Ruby to dark red, moderate pigment extraction, very good clarity. Cherry, weedy greens and barrel wood aromas on nose. Cherry flavor with length, some seed bitterness on finish with leather and cherry pulp fruitiness. Aftertaste of cherry stone. Moderate skin and barrel tannin astringency after 30 minutes. Could use some decanting. Mint, blueberry and black currant flavors emerge after 60 minutes. Solid fruit expression for variety, shows well for Cali cool climate vineyard location in Templeton Gap. Perhaps more barrel character than some might prefer; not my usual style for the varietal but good fruit at its core, and well crafted overall. Castoro reds can be tannin-forward, and this Pinot noir is no exception. The natural question is: can you dig it when a Pinot noir is made this way? I love the challenge, but do you have the patience to age or decant this wine long enough to show all it can be? — 13 days ago

Reserve Whale Rock Vineyard Tempranillo 2015

Three weeks later and I’m craving another taste of this... See my previous notes but this time: moderately extracted ruby red. Some black currant in nose initially. Strawberry and raspberry jam flavors, some seed bitterness and tannin chewiness, otherwise well balanced. Slightly oily, cherry and citrus peel aftertaste emerges after 30 minutes, black pepper on nose and in aftertaste after 45. Light to moderate skin astringency after an hour — 5 months ago

Merlot 2015

Dense purple, highly extracted pigment. Cherry, mixed berry and sage notes in nose on initial pour. Blueberry, cherry flavors, light fine-grained skin astringency in finish, nice length of fruit. Interesting tannin structure, heavy in skin contact, light on seeds. Tannins build in intensity with time, aeration. The Castoro style for reds is tannin-heavy, not to everybody’s taste, but I’ve always admired their commitment to a style that’s gone somewhat out of fashion elsewhere. To my thinking, it enhances even the much maligned Merlot varietal (Sideways, anyone?) No one wants to age wines like this anymore, it seems. I wonder if wines like this even need further aging. Decant, aerate, enjoy, tannins and all... Three hours should do it. — 6 months ago

Reserve Dorsa 2015

A.k.a Cabernet Dorsa varietal, German cross between Dornfelder and Cabernet Sauvignon. In commercial production in Germany since 2003. Dense inky purple red, highly extracted pigment. Leather, black currant, white pepper and slight funk note in nose initially. Red fruit and mint flavors, tart, fine grain seed tannins with white pepper, mint flavors on finish. Varietal associated with flavors of cherry (present) and bell pepper (arguably present). My first encounter with the varietal. — 5 months ago
