Sacrisassi Rosso Colli Orientali del Friuli 2017

Nice light gem. Terrific pizza wine, though don’t let that discount it. Pizza is an art form, this is the frame. — 12 days ago

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2004

Very interesting to see this age - upon release this was extremely tight & austere and now it has blossomed into a beautifully expressive aged Riesling w/dark gold color, big whiff of petrol alongside peach & apricot. On the palate it is still razor sharp & angular w/only slightly rounded off edges no doubt due to age & bit of fat it gained. On the finish it is bone dry with clearly defined lemon & lime, mineral-y w/hint of creaminess. — 7 days ago

Great restraint on your part to be drinking this at 17 years - one of Australia’s best.

Bob: did not have access to my cellar for the last 5 years, but I knew these were built for the long run. I love Clare Valley wines (red & white) and I used to sell Grosset... I have more of these & will revisit in a few years

La Pira Barolo Nebbiolo 2007

Shay A

WNH Barolo theme.

Not having any experience with this producer, I tried a small glass at pop and pour, then decided to decant for an hour and a half. I then enjoyed the bottle over the next two hours.

I’m between a 92 and 93 here. If I had tried this blind, I think I would have taken this to left bank Bordeaux. As odd as that sounds, my reasons are mostly due to hardly any floral notes at all, and a hint of leather on the palate (with both the classic Barolo and Cabernet finish showing drying tannins). The longer this was open, the more cherry menthol notes picked up (but not in a bad way). Red currant, cherry and vanilla Pope tobacco, and underripe fleshy black cherry skin. Sporting a classically warm 2007 profile with richness and tannin, this powered through the entire evening and was best about halfway through. I’m sure it can hold many more years, but this is at a stage where the fruit is fading to the background and savory herbs, dates and fig will soon make their way to the forefront. Just depends on your preferred Barolo style. Enjoyed from a Grassl Cru glass which does a great job of accentuating the aromatics in old world wines.

Cabernet Franc 2016

Excellent white wine blend - the classic Sauvignon blanc/Sémillon blend but made more full bodied with vanilla due to aging in oak barrels. Paired wonderfully with salmon. — 4 days ago

Radici Taurasi Aglianico 2008

2021/4/21-22 with pork shoulder Neapolitan alla genovese, busciata di tuminia cacio e pepe, etc. Rich with black cherry, iron and spice, but a nice backbone of acid keeping this fresh and tannin giving structure. I am always suspicious of native Italian varieties that see barriques, but it wasn’t intrusive here - whether due to a deft touch, time or both. — 4 days ago

Basarin Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2013

Monster Barbaresco, perhaps with heavy oak aging influence (?).... but after 8 years, becoming more integrated. A crowd favorite, due to some ripeness and rich red fruit and leather notes... this is not your feminine subtle Barbaresco. — 17 days ago

Les Preuses Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 1996

maligned due to the high incidence of premox, I forget how staggeringly great a vintage this was when a bottle has a sound cork. Bought on release for $69.99, this bottle was opened last night and it was magical.

A quarter century old, it could go another decade at this level. The intensity, clarity, depth, finesse—all stunning. It was one of those rare bottles where everything clicked, all in tune, perfectly harmonized.

I realize I’ve written two paragraphs and have said nothing yet about the wine. Bouquet and palate offered a panoply of citrus, fennel, menthol, and mineral flavors, all balanced perfectly on its acid, just resonating.

One of the best whites I’ve had in years. Stunning. Such a shame I’ve poured so many 96s down the drain.
