Cantina Sociale Mendrisio

Gioia Merlot Chardonnay 2023

Cantina Mendrisio Gioia 2023, Switzerland

Here is a unique Merlot for
#MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Pale gold in color.

The nose reminds me of a Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of Chardonnay.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with mild complexity.

Showing citrus, green apples, grapefruits, bitter herbs and spices.

Tangy finish with limes and light almonds.

Easy drinking and good by itself or with food. Nicely balanced and elegant.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Chardonnay. Aged in concrete vats on the lees for 6 months.

12.3% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$20.

Cantine Briamara

Barbapreve Canavese Barbera

Like this one a lot. A very bright, fresh, mineral, sappy Barbera, not quite like any other I’ve had. Crunchy red fruit, roasted sweet cherry tomato, a touch of menthol on the noise. A soft herbal quality, medium plus acids and good structure. Tannins are firm but never astringent and soften nicely with about an hour of air. Would decant next time. — 4 years ago

San Giorgio Spumante Erbaluce di Caluso

Sparkling Erbaluce in Alba from benchmark producer. Learned that outside of Canavese, the name Erbaluce cannot be used. It seems that sometimes the Italians - and Alto Piedmontese (a name we in the US bestowed on a them) let their hyper local regional alliances and squabbles - undermine their global marketability.
