Cal Y Canto

J. Bouchon

Canto Sur Carménère Blend 2021

Medium ruby in color; plums, bell peppers, and paprika on the nose; medium acidity; medium plus tannins; tastes like raspberries, jalapeño, and wet slate with a long finish. It's a really interesting flavor. It's not for everyone, but well made. I like it. — 19 days ago

Laurel Glen Vineyard

Counterpoint Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

Always been a fan of the 1995 Cal Cabs, this shows just a trace of a green note up front, but nicely balanced, ready to drink, second label Laurel Glen!! — 3 years ago

Miss those 80's and 90's vintages of Laurel Glen. Tough love in a bottle.

Dunn Vineyards

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

Backward mountain fruit, but not as tannic as I’d expected, though this should easily last another 25 years, old school Cal Cabernet (13% ABV) that I long for!! — 3 years ago

Eggo Blanc de Cal Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Bursting with flavor. Juicy citrus fruit, mouth watering acidity, and a salty minerality. — 5 years ago

El Canto de la Alondra

Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2022

I was told this bottle is scarcely available as only about 1,000 cases produced each vintage and most of them stay in Spain.
Rich and ultra smooth, this somewhat reminds me of Clio. Coconut and Creme de Cassis overwhelmed initially but eventually settled down. Unapologetically hedonistic, it’s nevertheless delicious and possesses great substance. Would love to try one with some bottle age, but the first vintage release was 2014.

Inglenook

Cask Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1961

Cask J1. Dark blackish tawny color. Very much opaque. Wispy, rustic nose. Notes of charcoal, roses, mocha, cola, vanilla, and charred barrel. Seems very old to me. Is it fortified? While I'm trying to ascertain what this might be, it's revealed as old school Cal Cab. Pretty impressive stuff. — 3 years ago

Nicholson Jones

St. Helena Sauvignon Blanc 2016

One of my favorite small production wine, 300 cases. Cal Nicholson spent his youth in So. CA & after a long marketing career he hung up his spurs to follow his 2 real interests in life – surfing & wine making. Jones is the maiden name of Cal’s wife Pam. A wonderful wine. Aromas of lemon citrus with herb, stone & tropical fruits. Palate, peach, Granny Smith apple & ripe melon flavors with lively citrus zest wrapped in lbalanced acidity. Lingering finish ending with mineral citrus finish. Consistent! Nice! — 5 years ago
