A beautiful wine full of classic Barolo flavors: dark cherry, tobacco, rose petal, cedar and more. Reserved yet deeply satisfying. — 4 months ago
Drinking great now but still on the early side of things. — 7 months ago
The Valmaggiore MGA is notable for being a distinctive hillside in Roero, just outside of the Barolo zone. The soils are sandy and make for a more elegant expression of Nebbiolo d’Alba. The 2023 pours a pale garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart and ripe red fruits: raspberry, strawberry, red flowers, and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. If you want your Nebbiolo fix but don’t wanna shell out for Barolo or Barbaresco, this is a smart choice. Drink now through 2033. — 10 days ago
2017 vintage. Medium body. Upon opening, fairly compact for a “resto vintage”. The usual tar and dark cherry notes. The longer this was open, the more fanciful it got. French Toast. Cola nut. Chambord. Eucalyptus. White pepper. Pomegranate/hibiscus. Transitioned into a Barolo/(red) Burgundy hybrid. Not enuff structure to go more than 4-5 years in this current uniform. Would attempt another open field tackle again in the near future tho. If you wanna crush an above-decent Barolo tonight without infanticide/ca$hi$h/non-compliant tannin issues, you could do immeasurably worse. 12.15.24. — 3 months ago

From magnum. This is the 2016 Riserva from the “Le Coste” MGA, just south of the village of Barolo and merely a block away from the winery. Giacomo Grimaldi is one of only four producers with holdings in Le Coste and the only one currently producing a single cru expression. That being said, Giuseppe Rinaldi is largely responsible for Le Coste’s reputation and it shares many characteristics from a soil and exposure standpoint as Cannubi. The fruit for this wine comes from the very highest point in the vineyard (the lower section was recently replanted) and the Riserva is only made in the very best vintages (2019 will be the next Riserva).
The wine pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe red fruits: Morello cherry, raspberry, red rope licorice, roses, tar, dried herbs, cigar box. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acidity. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, silky and slightly savory. Far and away the loveliest wine I’ve ever enjoyed from Giacomo Grimaldi. Elegant, yes…but there is significant depth. Very impressive. Drink now, with patience through 2056. — 12 days ago
