Barón de Barbón Vendimia Seleccionada Rioja Tempranillo 2018

Cherry, strawberry, and a touch of oak. Soft tannins (after decanting for around 1 hour). Allowing this young rioja a chance to breathe neutralises the acidity, leaving an easy drinking, well balanced rioja. A little black pepper in the back that closes a medium finish. Medium body — 4 days ago

Gran Reserva Fincas de la Villa Rioja Tempranillo 2006

A ruddy ruby color with deep purple accents and a wide, orange rim. Definite signs of bricking here but not too bad. The earthy, smokey nose packs quite the punch. Toasted oak and stewed plums play lead off with dried herbs and earth coming in too. Slightly muted red fruits dance in the nose.

At 14 years, this is still an amazingly lively Tempranillo. Despite the bricking the fruit is still there and kicking as hard as it can. Not nearly as dry as more youthful vintages of this, it’s substantially more balanced and fragrant. Medium bodied with medium acidity and nice tannins.

Patience is a virtue when it comes to this. Give it plenty of time and it will respond with an intense entry of black cherry, strawberry, and mulberry. Signature spice all over this along with herbs and oak. Medium to long finish. Still has some life yet.

Very smooth and drinkable rioja. Not too dry, cassis and a hint of pepper on the nose. Dark berry and a hint of vanilla and tobacco on the finish. Delicious! — 11 days ago

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2010

Meat juice, cigar, menthol, spices and I'm not sensing any fruit in there. The palate shows a huge acid backbone which tends to make it a tiny bit unbalanced if you drink it for itself. It calls for food. There are some tangy red forest fruits all along the palate. A good width with some grip, some weight and matter too. Very harsh tannins kick in in the middle which dry everything up before a long finish with those same red forest berries and a tiny bit of salt. I'll let it breathe for another hour to see if it settles but it's an enraged mustang running in the desert right now. — 8 months ago
