Baloo

Bodega Comando

La Bruja de Rozas Sierra de Gredos Grenache 2020

Kaa the snake, not Baloo the bear… bitter herbal garrigue, nice texture, funky brett that blew off after a few hours. Nice pairing with lamb sausage/lentil soup. A touch more heat than we’d prefer. — a year ago

Fattoria Galardi

Terra di Lavoro Roccamonfina Aglianico Piedirosso 2004

Still quite young with much tannic grip. Tar and leather, tobacco and a funk on the nose. Currants. Dark and smoky. More Kaa the snake then Baloo the bear. — 6 years ago

Domaine Tempier

Bandol Mourvedre Blend 2013

Always love the dark bitter garrigue undertone to these. Blackberry, clove, herbs, hollow cheeks, dry, never plummy. More Kaa the snake to CDP/Southern Rhone Baloo the Bear. This is just entering the drinking window and will evolve beautifully... — 4 years ago

Finca Sandoval

Manchuela Syrah Blend 2009

Fascinating. Soy sauce, leather, pepper nose. On the palate it's silky dark fruit and an odd astringent tannic note that crescendoes with the finish. To borrow Luca Turin's analogy, this wine is more Kaa the Snake than Baloo the Bear, and how you feel about that is a good predictor of how you'll find this wine. — 7 years ago

Château Ste. Anne

Bandol Mourvedre Grenache 2016

The hissing yet attractive bitterness & garrigue are present and correct—more Kaa the Snake than Baloo the Bear. Well-integrated and attractive if less complex than others. Decant or hold. — 4 years ago

Château La Canorgue

Côtes du Luberon Red Blend 2016

Tastes like a fine Bandol red at $16.00. What more could one desire? All the garrigue, dark bitterness, and structure you want in a Provençal red. More Kaa the snake than a Rhône Baloo the bear, pick up a few of these to set aside. Fabulous. — 5 years ago
