Our first time every at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction and we will make sure to come back! (Tasting was on 9/28/18).
Ninth wine at the Friday Auction Tasting for the Cape Winemakers Guild and seventh still white wine. This is made up of 100% Chardonnay by Andries Burger from Elgin. Fruit was 100% wild fermented in 33% new French oak and on the lees for nine months. Only 70 cases produced with 40 being auctioned in 2018.
Light to medium greenish yellow in appearance. Interesting nose with stone and citrus fruits, some creaminess, spices and a touch of oak. Not as much oak influence as some of the other Chardonnays this tasting. Medium plus acidity (7/10) and a bit sharp with a light plus body. Palate likes to linger with layers of peaches, lemons, green apples and some white gravel. Long finish. Drink till 2025.
$$ - Tasted at the Cape Winemakers Auction. Average bid at auction was R4,910.00 ($57.82 a bottle) a case. Highest bid was R5,400.00 ($63.60 a bottle) and lowest bid was R4,600.00 ($54.17 a bottle)

Oh yes, oh yes. An homage to the big reds of Spain, Yoko and Andries' El Rojo is an outstanding blend of tempranillo, grenache and shiraz. Outrageously spicy and deep - think smoked paprika, cayenne, with dirty, gritty, earthy undertones and tones leather and plum. Incredibly full-flavoured and rich, yet still palatable, frisky and drinkable. Muy, muy bien. — 4 years ago
