Conti Zecca

Nero Rosso del Salento Negroamaro Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

2018 opened December 2023. Cool notes dominate the nose. I want to call the scent that I detect as spearmint, but it doesn’t have the spiciness of a mint— just the coolness. Menthol without the ‘ol? Hint of ripe cherries underneath its chill façade. The cherries and the mint continue their theme on the front of the palate. Light to medium tannic structure that expresses itself towards the finish. Kinda weak on the mid-palate, but that’s a momentary lapse. It ends with a medium-long bitter finish that mostly consists of mildly bitter volcanic high notes. I drinking this along side, a beef stew with lots of carrots, brussels sprouts, and some leftover bacon in it. I’m not much on wine pairing, but this compliments, my stew perfectly. — 3 years ago

Wittmann

Morstein Großes Gewächs Riesling 2021

Weingut Wittmann is a longstanding member of the VDP – an association of quality-minded producers in Germany who impose upon themselves more rigorous rules than are imposed under German wine law, in pursuit of excellence, authenticity, & a purity of terroir expression.

This is the “GG” 2021 Wittmann Morstein Riesling, made with fruit from a Große Lage-designated vineyard site (i.e., Morestein) pursuant to the VDP classification system, which means it’s a top quality site, akin to a “grand cru” vineyard in Burgundy, capable of producing fruit for age-worthy wines of distinction.

We’re drinking it in a youthful (and still delicious!) state now – stored in the right conditions, it could age for a decade+…

In appearance, this wine has a medium lemon hue with medium (+) intensity of precise and lifted aromas and flavors including white peach, apricot, mango, kumquat, green apple, lemon peel, lime zest, blossom, honeysuckle, wet slate, flint, oystershell, saline, and petrol notes.

The palate is bone dry with medium alcohol (12.5% ABV), a medium body, and racy acidity.

It’s elegant, angular, & nuanced.

We’re pairing it with grilled, spice-rubbed pork tenderloin and roasted brussels sprouts.

Avec Les Bon Veux Saison Malt

Amazing that this is 9.5% because it's so easy to drink a 750mL bottle. It really is wine quality. I have a hard time identifying the nose on beers but it reminds me of being inside the cow feed silo as a kid. It smells like late summer harvest left to ferment.
It's a very clean taste of...... Wheat grass?
