Marlborough Pinot Noir 2017

Well balanced Pinot from this excellent Marlborough producer. 2017 is a tricky year but still very well balanced for a NZ Pinot. Earthiness is balanced with the cherry fruit which reminds me of an Prince Edward county Pinot. Bought it at the winery (the family owned viticulteurs are awesome hosts, I highly recommend to book a tasting) shame they haven’t released the awesome 2019 vintage. One of the nicest Pinot from Marlborough and it is wired to drink in a camp site! 😂. 😢 where is my cheese plate? — 4 years ago

Bar Dog

California Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

There is a medium-dark tint in the glass, while the nose displays red fruit - plums, raspberries - and a healthy dose of oak spice - clove, cinnamon, mocha - along with an herbal note of eucalyptus. The palate is fruit-forward enough to keep the oak at bay and there is a rustic chalkiness to the wine, which I find appealing.

Dog Point Vineyard

Marlborough Chardonnay 2018

First bottle of three that I bought on release - the 2018 Chardonnay from Dog Point in Marlborough. I’ve had this wine once before, a couple of years ago - the 2011 - which was superb.

This 2018 has a young appearance, greenish yellow in hue, Chablis-like.

Highly reductive on the first night with a strong herbal edge; much more open and harmonious on the second. Flint, wet shale, lemon, orange peel.

The palate is lean, energetic and super high in acidity, with prevailing flavours of lemon and lime, Braeburn apple and only the faintest hint of any lactic notes. It finishes quite long, but it’s bracing, taut and youthful at present. I expect this to age quite well and will pull my next bottle in three years (note to self!).
