Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

It’s Cabernet Day today. Let's celebrate with a nice one from Napa Valley.

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose with blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, vanilla, licorice, spices, earth, peppercorn, cedar, chocolates, mocha, coffee and leather.

Full bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black cherries, blueberries, cedar, leather, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, coke, graphite, earth, coffee and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This four-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is showing nice complexity with a great mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle, and better as it opens up and shows the tannins and complexity. An hour in a decanter does the trick.

Wine Enthusiasts 92 points.

Nicely balanced, fruit forward, rich and elegant. Tasty and delicious.

A good sipping wine, that will age nicely in the next 5 to 15 years. I've had a few vintages with much more age before, and it is always delicious.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with cheeses and crackers.

A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 16 months in mostly French oak barrels (44% new).

14.6% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Premiere Napa Valley Solo Double Block Lot No.185 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

I know wine gets better than this... but I can’t remember when I’ve had a better glass. Very enjoyable. A late afternoon family lunch with Ossobuco and risotto and this great wine. What a perfect afternoon. — 4 months ago

Nickel & Nickel

Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Quarry Vineyard climbs the slopes above the Silverado Trail which produces an intensely flavored Cab of cherry, black tea, and soft tannins. This deep ruby red wine is nearly colored ink. Not to be forgotten! — 2 months ago

James Cole

Napa Valley Malbec 2012

9.2

I’ve never had a Charles Hendricks wine I didn’t like. Especially, his Malbecs. This is not nearly as good as his 07 Hope & Grace Malbec but, none the less still very good.

The fruits on the nose reveal the ripeness & freshness of the 12 Napa vintage. Loads of blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries but, it’s the boysenberries, mulberries & blue fruits & raspberries on the glass edges that really make for a great nose. Black licorice, dark fruit cola with shades of liqueur, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, limestone & sandstone, big tobacco, dark spice, leather, oak barrel shavings, dry top soil, dry crushed rocks, stones, rich black earth, sweet tarriness with brilliant; dark, red, blue & purple florals framed in lavender & violets.

The body is just full. The 12 vintage was always more fruit than tannins, not that there were no tannins or structure in this 12 & other 12’s. Ripe, lush & slightly ruby; blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries but, really love the boysenberries, mulberries & blue fruits in my reds. Black licorice, dark fruit cola with shades of liqueur, black pepper, limestone & sandstone, forest floor, dry stems, big tobacco, dark spice with just a touch of heat, clove, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, leather, graphite, steeped fruit tea, oak barrel shavings, dry top soil, dry crushed rocks, stones, volcanics, rich black earth, sweet tarriness with dark, lush; red, blue & purple florals framed in lavender & violets. The acidity is nice & round. The finish is well balanced fruit & earth, elegant and persists nicely with just the right amount of dark spice on the long set.

This would have a little scored higher but, I coravined it a few weeks back and restored it laying down. Seems to have lost a bit from opening.

Conn Creek

Anthology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Had this three years ago, aged well. Conn Creek is a boutique winery on the Silverado Trail in the Rutherford district headed by winemaker Mike McGrath. A blend of 75% Cab Sauv, 16% Cab Franc, 4% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep Ruby with aromas of ripe fruit and earthy oak notes. On the palate ripe blackberry and raspberry flavors with espresso and tobacco tones with fine well integrated tannins. Long finish ending with cedar, cacao and earthy tobacco. Aged well still has room for more. Nice! — 4 months ago
