Serrat

Shiraz Viognier 2013

Pepper and spice and all things nice as the saying goes as well as a violet note. Very youthful at 10 years of age. The following night a blackcurrant peppery note. Good persistence and length on the medium bodied palate. Tom Carson, the owner and winemaker of Serrat (a Catalonian word meaning close planting - in this case 8800 vines per hectare - one bottle of wine per vine). Tom is also the chief winemaker at Yabby Lake and an in demand Show Judge with a very good palate - Serrat is his private venture with French wife, Nadege. They also import a small excellent range of Burgundy. — 10 months ago

Serrat Pinot Noir 2016

From the Mornington Peninsula (although the fruit for this Pinot Noir came from the Yarra Valley ) - this is Tom Carson’s personal project when he’s not making wine for Yabby Lake - his main job. This had strawberry and other red fruits like cherry and a small whole bunch influence. Oak is dialled right back. A medium weight palate that is yet to show its full potential. First of 3 purchased and somewhat closed. Will leave having the 2nd for a couple of years. — 3 years ago

Yarra Valley Grenache Noir

Who would've thought that an impeccably balanced, ripe, elegant Grenache could come out of the Yarra. It's so beautiful. Rose, red fruits, silky tannins. Mid weighted wine. Not a fruit bomb. 13 alcohol and it just provides so much class — 7 years ago

Close Planted Yarra Valley Grenache 2017

Nose not giving much initially - just an earthy note - fairly contained. Probably opened a little young? The next night it showed red fruited aromatics of raspberry and strawberry. Very fine on the palate and quite delicious. The winemaker and owner Tom Carson with his French wife, Nadege, just won Viticulturalist of the year 2 days ago in the Halliday Wine Awards. They also import a range of Burgundies. In his “spare time “ Tom is also the winemaker at the highly regarded Yabby Lake. — 2 years ago

Close Planted Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2015

The tasting notes for this wine from 32 weeks ago pretty much cover it. Aromas of cashews, lees stirring , barrel ferment characters. These aromas dominate any fruit aromas of citrus and melon. What you might say is a “worked” Chardonnay but most enjoyable. The following night it had filled out somewhat with a peach note. — 3 years ago

Domaine Tour Boisée

Bel Serrat Marselan 2017

New grape varietal for me. Combines the power of Cabernet Sauvignon and the brightness of Grenache. Aromas of bramble berries and dark cherries/currants. Hints of baking spices. Pallet is loaded with ripe berry and plum fruit followed by notes of vanilla, spice, dried herbs and toasted oak. Well integrated soft tannins. Reasonably well balanced. — 2 years ago

Domaine La Tour Boisée

Bel Serrat Vin de Pays d'Oc Chardonnay

For the price, this is fabulous. Very soft and light, clearly aged and neutral oak with lovely honeysuckle scents. Pleasure to drink with food or without. 2019. — 2 years ago

Fourre-Tout Yarra Valley Barbera Blend 2017

Made by Tom Carson of Yabby Lake fame in the Mornington Peninsula. Tom is also a respected Show Judge in demand around Australia. Serrat is his personal label with French wife, Nadege. They also import a range of Burgundies. “Fourre Tout”- the English translation meaning “Catch All”. This is a field blend of Barbera, Malbec, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. Mid Ruby in colour. Plummy aromas with black and red fruits. Strangely can see the spicy Malbec on the nose more than the other varieties. I was expecting this to be a more frivolous red than it turned out to be. This had good structure and tannins - would benefit from a few years in the cellar. Went well with Chicken Pie. Footnote: Serrat is a Catalan word meaning High Density Planting. Serrat has 8000 vines per Hectare producing less than a bottle per vine. Next in a few years. — 4 years ago
