Dry River

Martinborough Pinot Gris 2016

Pardon the label. A humidity malfunction in one of my wine fridges. Luscious and sweet on the front palate yet finishes dry with diminishing acid and an attractive acidic bitterness on the back palate. Quince, nectarine, peach and apricot with that moreish bitterness. A beautifully made new world Pinot Gris which is dangerously moreish. I will now open an Alsatian Pinot Gris to compare. I’m tipping the Dry River to prevail. — 2 months ago

Craggy Range

Te Muna Road Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

Crisp and fruity Sauvignon Blanc. Has a lot more power than most SV’s from NZ. Decadent notes of lime, grapefruit and white peach balanced with sharp acidity and saline notes. Delicious. Pair with food for sure. — 2 months ago

Domaine Zind Humbrecht

Alsace Pinot Gris 2019

Similar notes to 7 months ago in September 2021. Comparing with the Pinot Gris from Dry River in Martinborough NZ. I found this to be musky with intense pear and apricot notes. Both were luscious with low acid and both finished dry. Not much in it but I gave the decision narrowly to the Dry River because of it’s brighter new world fruit. — 2 months ago

Elegant Pinot. Red cherry, raspberry and black cherry, some mineral and slight liquorice. dry, mid+ acidity, soft ample tannin, Burgundy style. ABV12.5% but not lighter than the figure itself. Can age more. — a month ago

Very nicely aged NZ pinot. Smooth, some fun spices and darker and red fruit. Orange peel (?). — 2 months ago

Waipara Pinot Noir 2020

A producer new to me but a district I love as in Waipara or Canterbury north of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. Wonderful red fruited aromatics with minerality, freshly tilled soils, compost heap (Sous Bois) and various spices. From gravel soil vineyards in North Canterbury. Aged in French Oak barrels for about 18 months. No fining or filtration. Canterbury flies under the radar for many wine lovers but I can assure you it is a source of high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Bell Hill is worth seeking out. — 2 months ago
