Part of a double-blind, side-by-side between the 2017 Sandlands Mataro, which also happens to be from Contra Costa County. Opened and allowed both bottles to slow-ox about three hours prior to our guests arriving. Slightly deeper in color. The nose was lingonberries and dusty earth. On the palate, there were plums and spices. This comes across more round than the Sandlands and has the silkiest of deliveries. Medium tannins but they seemed to grow as time went on.
Given the structure, I expect these to continue aging very well. At this stage, this comes across as a very elegant wine. The Oakley Road Vineyard is own-rooted and dry-farmed; planted 117 years ago. 352 cases. — 4 hours ago
To me this is just to be called Riesling+
I went to grab a box from the cellar and i found this bottle had the cork popped out.
Well, it must have been opened for a couple of days at least cause the wine that spilled out was vanished, floor was dry. However a couple of glasses were left in the bottle and i obviously gave it a go.
The wine was pretty cloudy, marvellous intensity though; it had freshness, mineral, fruit, aromatic herbs and spices. A pity cause I was meant to bring this back to Europe next year to get some friends to taste it. Very very long. — 19 days ago
Always a treat to try a Bell Hill Pinot Noir. Quite light in colour. Wonderful florals of violet, roses and a stalky whole bunch note - a nose reminiscent of Vosne Romanee. A light to medium weight palate showing more body than the colour would indicate. Strong Sous Bois character with red fruits and great persistence. I have very few wines from Canterbury NZ but on this showing, should have more. This is Bell Hill’s 2nd ranked Cuvée. I have a few bottles of their 1st ranked Cuvée but they need more cellar time before popping the cork, as does this Old Weka Pass 2016. A great Pinot with further potential. — a day ago
